I think most places carry line and hooks. (Seriously, you don't need special equipment to catch them._

Dead white minnows are good bait but they stink to high heaven, the wife fishes most days in the summer with just night crawlers for carp for her cats.

Listen to sprung and rusty. Throw out a few handfuls of corn, bait a hook with least amount of weight possible and catch all the carp you want. Better make sure chumming is legal where you are fishing.

there is a you tube channel catfish & carp that gets into the carp specific stuff

much of it can get purchased from amazon , don't be surprised if the the seller is from another country , as carp fishing is much more popular in the Europe and Asia

fake corn , hair rigs and other more specialty carp equipment

in the spring any day now the kids do well for suckers and some carp with about 1 oz of weight and a short 12-18 inch leader , small circle hook and worm hooked and hooked and hooked and hooked to make sort of a ball of worm covering the hook. they toss it out in the current and the fish swimming up stream suck it up they let it have it till it starts dragging the weight and the rod tip goes down.

last spring my some was catching 30 or so a day

some carp or cat specific poles and reels have a function where it will let it run like an extremely light drag then you flip a switch and start reeling and it has normal drag

often multiple rods set on bite alarms set back in a chair and wait for the bite alarm to sound

Carp stuff is no different than bluegill stuff, just on a bigger pole......sometimes.

Or you could make mountains out of mole hills and google European Carp fishing.

Talk to your game and fish if your looking for bait they might be killing off a area overrun with them.

I've spent many a summer day catching carp. You don't need any special equipment.
A hook, maybe some sinkers depending upon current, and bait. I used doughballs for bait, made with flour and cornmeal.

No need to over think it.

a hook and a handful of quaker old fashioned oats made into a dough ball, have caught hundreds of them. don't go with line they can't break or they'll just pull the hook.

"Carp specific tackle" you could be looking for a number of things... Hair rigs work better than plain hooks, you may have some turtles catfish and other fish work your bait. The use of pop ups will help with that. Carp are strong pullers and can be line shy at times. 6-12lb test seems best for me, I have caught plenty using corn, worms grubs and home made dough baits. A net can be your best friend when it comes to landing these chunky fish... They make good coon/mink bait and great fish oil....

Get some whole kernel corn , soak it in a pail , till it gets sour. Chum where you want to fish. Fish will learn to come there.. Then fish with canned kernel corn on a long hook or a hair rig. Use a large sinker about 18 inches up the line. Fish will bolt and set their own hook , when they feel the weight. Hang on, a lot like having a race horse on the line. If you are into a big one. They are great smoked. old243

How receptive are they to bait during their spawn? It's the only time I see them shallow here and it is extremely weedy and muddy so letting the bait sit on the bottom seems like it would not be seen. I would love to catch them on hook and line but am limited to shooting them with a bow. This is my biggest at 40.5 #.

PS, They still put up a pretty good battle on the arrow line.

If you're looking for a rod/reel, I recently purchased a 9' steelhead rod and a spinning reel with a baitrunner drag for about $120 with free shipping on Amazon.
There is also lots of carp gear available on there, but I agree with the folks on here that (aside from the baitrunner reel) standard tackle is all that is required.
99% of my carp fishing is done with a 1/2 oz egg sinker, barrel swivel, 9" fluorocarbon or monofilament leader and a #4 gamakatsu circle hook stuffed with corn.
If there are lots of weeds I add a mini marshmallow to float the bait.
Unless you are in an area with heavy catch and release pressure, North American carp are not so skittish/educated as to require specialized tactics like hair rigs, bait catapults, etc.
If you like to tinker and experiment, then go ahead and do what makes you happy, but if you're on a budget don't overcomplicate the whole process.

Just happy to be here.
