Hello. New septic tank 16 years ago, only the toilet goes into it, straight pipe to the ditch after that. I put the bacteria powder in it every 3 months or so. Some have said it will never need pumped (it never has been). What are your thoughts? A lot easier to pump in the summer but won't mess with it if it won't ever need it. Thank you for your time.

Better to pump them out on most systems but find a guy that does them on the side the full time guys want a lot to do the job here.

Uncover it and probe it with a long stick. If its very soft I wouldn't have it pumped if its real firm I would have it pumped. I've seen them nearly solid.

All the bacteria in the world will not digest the cellulose fiber in your tank, it wiil need pumped eventually, how often depends on many factors.

Like ADC said. Stick it and check for sludge. If it's all liquid, no need to pump. Thanks for the reminder, I need to check mine this summer.

Do you have a filter on the outlet? If you don't you should. When the filter clogs it's time to clean the filter and call the pump man.

I've never heard of a filter on septic. Things are done differently all over the place.

Lol, I'm pretty sure he said the filter goes on the outlet of the septic tank, so turds shouldn't get to it.

I think it depends on how much use it is getting and what kind of use. If you use those cushy toilet papers that have cotton fiber you will be needing to pump on a regular basis. I use Scotts single ply and have not pumped my tank yet. It has been in service since 1989.

... i don’t know what the yankee filter talk is about in here ... but if you have a normal and practical concrete tank that leaches off into a drain field... you’ll likely be good for 3 decades or so

We pump ours every 3 years. We have a pump that takes our waste out to two 65 foot in ground cells. I clean the filter for the pump every 6-10 weeks.

Apparently you don't have many women in your household.
The filter keeps solids out of the drainfield so it doesn't have to be replaced if you let pumping go too long.
