Who raises goats and what breed?

We use Kiko billie's with Boer/Kiko nannies. Moving to higher percentage of Kiko each year.

I want to do some. I run a tree service and we haul in so many trees covered in leaves it would be nice to have a pen full of goats to feed them to. My biggest reluctance on getting into it is

1- dealing with fences and goats
2- Goats are kind of expensive

I can't see it making much money unless I found a better market, dealing with the local Somalis is a nightmare and don't really want them out at my place.

We raise Boers and Nubian goats. The best market is for kids in 4H. Goats sell more at 3 to 5 days for 4H then they ever will for meat. Breed your does for your local and adjoining counties' fair dates. Buy the best stock, especially bucks, you can afford.

In my area you used to be able to buy goats at the sale barn for next to nothing. Then a bunch of some ethnic group (Bosnians, maybe?) moved into the area to the south of me to work in a packing plant. Because goat is a big staple in their diet, they have created a pretty good goat market in the area.

We've got a herd of mutts. Mostly descended from Kiko or Nubian stock with some other dairy breeds mixed in here and there. Since our management approach is pretty hands-off, we avoid Boers altogether. The individuals with greater Kiko heritage are consistently the top-performers in our herd.

The problem of goats and fences is a well-known issue for a reason. It's the biggest problem we face, but since we live pretty far from anyone else, it's perhaps less of a problem for us than for others (so far).

Yes, you can waste a lot of money on expensive goats if you want to, but it isn't a requirement. If you just want to have them to eat some leaves, then don't worry about getting pure-bred, registered, high-maintenance animals. Pick up some cheap, sturdy animals and have some fun. Sure, you may not get as much money selling in certain markets, but your expenses don't have to be quite so high either.

I had a client a couple years back that seemed to be doing well with brush goats. He rents them out all over Atlanta as an all natural brush clearing service. A trailer, some electric net fencing and solar charger and your in business.

You need to know your market.

For the meat market, you breed to have kids of the right weight and other characteristics for the various ethnic holidays where goat meat is consumed. Mature goats sell best at certain holidays and may have to be stinky to unblemished. Certain numbers of teeth have to be exposed for some Muslim holidays. You get more selling to the ultimate consumer, but most people choose to avoid the hassle and mess and sell at auction.

For the 4H market, you breed good stock to produce kids for 4H kids to show at their fairs. You breed so that your goats kid on acceptable dates for the local fairs.

For the hobby and small farm market, you breed so that you have kids when the weather is good.

Good stock costs less over time to keep and sells much easier for the non meat markets.

A car dealer in my town has a beautiful country home with a large pasture full of goats in front of his house. He was audited by the IRS once, and when the tax agent couldn’t find any reporting errors, the owner was questioned about his goat sales. He told the tax agent he had never sold a goat.

Who would have ever suspected the IRS would question someone about their goats. Keep your records.

Goat ribs are delicious.
