Going to build a bunch of mink boxes for next season. Ended up with a really good deal on some rough cut hemlock boards. So not being much of a mink trapper was wondering what brand and size coni is favored for mink? Was looking into the Belisle 120 or the duke 155.

I know Im going to get "Hammered" for saying this but I would ditch the boxes and not worry so much about the conibear. That being said I use 55 BMIs and Victor 110s alot with some 160 BMI and Victor brand.

I’m going to run blind sets and pocket set as well with some #11’s dbl long. But figured adding some mink boxes can’t hurt.

That’s what I was thinking a dozen or two.

Was thinking about putting the boxes out a couple weeks prior to season baited that way they get use to box being there and a free meal. Then the next trip up the creek they know that box may mean another free meal. Or would that just be a waste of time?

I dont think it is worth the extra running expenses unless you are trapping other fur in the same areas at the time. Then again,it is not cost effective either to go over the same ground twice at different times for different species.

So-I would set at the same time I bait.

I would be driving past a lot of creeks I plan on mink trapping next season while checking coyote sets. Coyote season is in for a month before are mink season starts. But agree and will just bait and set when season starts. Thanks.

I opt for the Belisle. Using 110's I had too many jumping around when I got to them. With the Belisle they were all DRT 100% of the time. All my sets were blind sets after ice up and a little snow. Seemed to be quite a few around this year. At least I saw a lot of tracks and made a fair number of catches. I even got one on my sons front sidewalk. He kept seeing it on his Ring doorbell. Apparently it was going to his neighbors bird feeder after the field mice it drew in.

Belisle 120 as it's also suitable for the effective and humane dispatch of rats, marten and fisher.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

I always favored my Victor 110s. I didn't like the Duke 110s because they were much harder to set off unless you re-worked the trap.

I don't care how nice the hand soap smells, you should never walk out of the restroom sniffing your fingers.

Thanks everyone. I’m going to go with the Belisle 120s for the boxes and trail sets and 110s for under over hanging banks thinking easier to hug the edge of bank with them only having one spring.

You need a magnum (total closure) jaw for dryland mink or else you will get occasional catch circles/live animals. Even big buck mink can breath quite well with a non magnum jaw even when perfectly positioned across the neck.

Absolutely. Turf little buggers.

Hammer,
I tried boxes here once but they didn't catch enough to be worth it. Maybe if our season went later but with our mild weather in season, you'd be better off with the blind sets your talking about. Let us know next year how ya make out if ya would, maybe you'll have the secret for success.

I like 150 Bridger magnums. The trigger is very touchy which is good for Mink

Thanks Hippie will do! I’m just going to build them cause the wood was free and I’m not going to use it for anything so figured why not make some mink boxes out of it. Figured can’t hurt to have a few set here or there while checking the blind sets or pockets out. Never a big water line guy except beaver trapping. While beaver trapping I seen a lot of mink sign just about every creek or pond I was beaver trapping so going to give it go next season. Thanks again everyone.

Usually boxes dont produce good till after freeze up and mink have a little harder to find food. One can put boxes out and bait IF you are going to run that line after freeze up. With some bait in box if mink comes by but isnt interested will check out on its next round coming thru after freeze up providing mink isnt on some one elses stretcher

You bet, a trap out can catch but one in the shed won't!

You can use unbaited boxes to catch mink. One of my favorites that always produces is as follows.
Find an old dead beaver dam or a bunch of debris on a creek that is not holding back water.Take a sharpened dry spruce pole about 3 inches in diameter and ream out a hole thru the dam/debris at the ends where the debris meets the bank, and ram a double open ended box in the opening with a 120 set at each end,or with footholds if open water deep enough to drown mink nearby.Mink love these tunnels and use them every trip thru if set at the right places.
You can shove a half a beaver carcass into the debris/dam and cover-not necessarily where your tunnel is.
This can be turned into a multi species set by snaring up the dam on each end approach to take canines/cats, crossing/attracted to the hidden bait.
Some of these natural locations will have rat and otter crossovers also which can be set up at the same time.
These locations are natural funnels for lots of different furbearers and are real fur pockets in the right habitat, that will produce a lot of fur.
Sets made at these spots keep working after freeze up with a bit of tweaking.
