Yes, most are.
To make it mandatory across the board would require the Feds to get involved and that might not be a good idea.

I know a lot of folks with a crap ton of hours donated to trapper ed.
I wouldn't want to be the one to call them slobs.
Sounds like the old "someone needs to do something but not me".
Slob trappers teaching, just golden lol.
Lets regulate ourselves out of business.

"Problem solving is the act of defining a problem; determining the cause of the problem; identifying, prioritizing, and selecting alternatives for a solution; and implementing a solution. The problem-solving process."

Mandatory trapper ed would at least give all new trappers, including potential slob trappers, a different perspective on right from wrong. Of course it's always up to the individual how they will proceed after the class. I can't see how that's a bad thing.

"slob trappers that intentionally choose to not use common sense or follow the laws in place" - no amount of education will fix them.

I don't need someone else pushing their agenda of what the best methods or traps are to my kid. Trying to tell them traps need modified with laminations, center swivels, smooth round jaw faces, short chains... all BS that decreases the traps holding power. Telling them snares are not good, you need CRs.... then,,,, paying them for it??? no thanks.

35 states are voluntary,Is like to see a states budget on how much is spent on educating the public on classrooms, shows, fairs, etc.I'd say it would be a real eye opener but I don't think it would be.

Probably should of state trapping orgs rather than states. Ohio DOW does do their own stuff, though most of it comes through other orgs that than give grants to.

What I meant was out of the fish and game budget, not the state per say.If a dept.makes a first time hunter take a hunter ed class before they can get a license there's no reason they can't demand the same for a first time trapper. And you can't use the low fur prices as an excuse, when fur prices where higher the state used the number 20,000 licenses sold annually.20,000 times $15.00 each. And 35 other states doing the same thing. That's what I question when I hear our fish and game depts.have implemented BMPs and that's good enough.35 states where you can bypass the class and buy the license nobody knows what they are. Some on here say this whole thing is a joke,I say it's a joke telling me because a game dept signed on to it means's they've been implemented.

It's not a bad guess,but we handle conibears,live animals,and guns.And we're far more controversial than hunters

Another great point that was brought up by nvwrangler was that the state hired a really good lobbyist that knows the ropes around the lawmakers. When a anti trapping fire flares up the lobbyist jumps in and puts it out. Normally i have a dim view of lobbyist unless if they were on our side fighting. I think that is something else that should be looked into.

Sportman's alliance is a big help in that regard. They have lobbyists that do a lot of work with the legislatures to help stop or push for some things we want. As an example the last few years here in Ohio we had the Protect Whats Right campaign as a result of some tomfoolery that was going on. Its been pretty successful on doing its mission. Just wish some other outdoor groups would of participated more.

I'm not sure lobbyist can help much with ballot initiatives. Most bans come from these. This is where the PR problem with public will get you.

Depending on the state involved it can help keep a ballot initiative from happening.

Some states, all you need to do is get enough signatures to get an initiative on the ballot. Not much a lobbyist can do about that. At that point depending on the media market in your state, it can cost millions to fight it. I think montana got off light with their fight in 16' as the opposition wasnt all that serious viewed in hindsight

It's more of problem in Western States. Plus, we got most of the Public land. Hence, the bans on trapping on public land in mostly western states.
