Ok Nimzy, I am always intrigued by your trap setups. Maybe you have explained this before, but it looks like you have a cable ring around your stake, what is the white thing that looks to be at the water surface. If itís trade secret I understand.

Yea I like rings on my rat traps. The clip ring is one way to suspend the trap on the pole, painted white for visual when. Checking. Thatís all u get lol. (Pretty useless information without Spring)

Floats and baited BGs above the water. Some colony traps and some stools. Don't dare set on any huts or feed beds or toilets. There must be 500 gees here + 100s of ducks. And the area Is open to the general public so I don't need any ducks or gees lopping around In traps.

What's your catch rate %, curious how it compares to SDs 80 to 90% when they had a lot of rats.

No way can I compare the catch rates In this situation to trapping In the Dakotas. But my stools are out preforming my floats but not by much.
The area I'm trapping Is surrounded by county park land and I can't trap that. So I'm just picking up stragglers On the private property I'm trapping.

I know guys In ND who use floats and they anchor them with a poplar pole. Those poles get worked over as far as the rat can reach. We cut short pieces of poplar and wire It to our stool stakes seems to work just fine without cutting all those long poles.

I used stools with a few variations and killed them but it was a DEEP population.

That's how It worked for me In ND. We were getting 300 rat days and we were checking sometimes twice a day. We would stage at least 4 stools In front of every culvert. Sometimes you could take a rat out of a trap and watch another one come along and get caught while you were standing there.
But If I could have found a 100 clean culverts In that country I would have used a lot more colony traps.

These were pretty much all bank rats we maybe set 20 or 30 huts.
I think It was the spring of 2011 that we trapped right up to the end of April.

We were going to pull today but since It's raining we are going to wait till tommrow. But we did get 2 more beaver today.

Not sure what you are getting at here.

If itís percentage, thatís what I tend to focus on and over the years have become fairly successful at achieving. After a couple days the rate has gone down even tho I generally keep them spread out, but It works for me. The rats are getting springy already so not worried.

If you are referring to populations it isnít the Dakotas. Iíve ran around WI marshes my whole life and only twice saw things even similar to the Dakotas. You know where you see 30 rats swimming around in broad daylight. And those two swamps carry my personal best catches which dwarf a normal or decent season. But it takes a perfect natural phenomena for that to happen and it will never last long, regardless how hard we trap.

YeA I dig it too. You pull on the chain and up comes the rat, if itís a male often a white booger will follow. Itís floats topside and immediately starts dissolving like Alka seiler. Leaving the aromatic oil slick.

In spring this is very good advice. Stay away from structures, for a couple reasons, as mentioned the resting waterfowl. Non target avoidance is good management. Another is entanglement issues, back off and find a clean pool. Place a target specific set and take the rat. This scenario is highly lethal and immediately takes the target to the bottom where they are concealed from the teeth of another aggressive rat. Tangled rats on the side of the house are most often damaged.

Still ice in the weeds.

Beav them ponds open up yet?

I like the poles with the coil-springs! I have an area I am sure I could use that type of set-up. May I ask how the trap stays in place? Perhaps a close-up?
