Hello all, what would your honest opinions be on the 22 hornet as a cartridge? I have a friend that is going to sell one and would like some input on it's performance for fur animals. I will more than likely use it for wolves and wolverines. Is it a pretty accurate round? Thanks!

I have a Ruger varmint/target 22hornet. Killed probably around 50 yotes with it. Super accurate with hornady vmax. My shots are close. Inside 50 yards. Most DRT or with in 15 - 25 yards depending on shot placement. I did put a volquartzen sear in it. Dropped the trigger pull from 6.5lbs to a crisp 1 3/4lbs.

I'm itchin' to see a coyote twitchin'.

More trappin' and less yappin'.

Another plus is that I can usually find ammo.

Low noise, low recoil. Good out to 150 yards. Reloading can be a bit tricky. Once set up, no problem. One pound of powder goes a long way. I wished I never sold my ruger 77. Sarge

I like mine. Great fox and cat rifle. Have killed badgers with it no problem. Coyotes are tough. Can run a long ways hit pretty hard. I dont shoot at them unless they are within 100 yards and Im confident I won't miss a heart or head shot. Coyote here weighs about 30 pounds. I never shot a wolf but if I was using the hornet I would want a real good shot. I have seen them in the zoo. Big animal lots of fur. Work good for badgers. I never seen a wolverine outside a zoo either. Wolverine has a reputation for being tough. So does a badger. Badger really isnt though. They die pretty easy if you shoot the front third of them. Even at a couple hundred yards.

Awesome! I have taken wolves with 223, 204, 22 mag, and 17 wsm so far. Was looking to try out the 22 hornet but haven't had an opportunity to find one for a great deal. will see how much they want for it and may get it if it isn't pricey

It seems to me the hornet would be great for fox, bobcat, and lynx, a little light for yotes but adequate at close range, but way too light for wolf and wolverine. Just my opinion but I think you should be thinking more like .22-250 or .243/6mm Rem class cartridge for the size animals you are targeting. Maybe even consider a 6.5 Grendel. I sure would wait until some of the AK guys chime in before pulling the trigger on the hornet.

check ammo availability for your area or AK

while available here it is typically not the corner store , hardware store , or big box store carrying 22 hornet

guns specific stores or outdoors and hunting stores are more likely to have 22 Hornet

my great grandfather thought it was the perfect deer gun , although he shot most of his deer while tending orchard and neck shot them. he liked low recoil and relatively low noise and at the time it was a flat shooter , not as much so now. but in the 1940s before the faster flatter 22s came around

great if you are a reloader.

if it is a light handy and accurate package at a good price , I would , if it is a heavy and expensive gun that will sit at home , I would pass.

I have a Savage 340 in 22 Hornet. I like it. Don't have many long shots up here in the woods.

It’s rough on foxes. Yotes are fine so long as they’re within the limits of the cartridge. I’ve killed plenty of deer with one when I owned it. Foolishly sold it. Wish I hadn’t. Awesome turkey round too.

I keep desperately hoping that one day someone will call me "Sir" without adding "please calm down" or "you're causing a scene."
