What sets do you use the different types of lure on? Gland, curiosity, food, urine, and skunky call lures, can you put them all down a dirthole or do some shine at other sets? I'm talking about fox and coyote lures mainly

Curiosity, food, and skunky call lures, can all work well in a dirt hole

I don't use lure, for the most part. I know. Weird.

95% of the time the only lure I use is QUALITY urine. Bait and pee will keep you as busy skinning and stretching as you want to be.

If you really want to understand ur target animal don't under estimate the wealth of information you will learn by testing lures and sets during the off season. The best guys got that way because of what they learn first hand from the critters themselves. Internet for theories animals for answers.

For some reason if I use urine at sets I end up with more non target catches. Will not use urine at sets anymore

How long you got? I really hope this thread takes off because you could write volumes on this topic.

Generally, I break my lure/bait usage into three categories based on what I'm hired to catch.

Beaver
Canine
All Other

The first is obvious and really only has lure and no bait. The lure is either castor or food based. I like to keep two castor based. Backbreaker for my main with WCS beaver blaster or Beaver Plus as my secondary change up. The secondary use is where I trial new lures. My food based is the incomparable Woodchipper and is always used in conjunction with an actual bait of peeled sticks, beavers choice of what they are currently cutting on site. I'm open to trying other food based.

This next is where my lure bag gets FUBAR but I'm trying to boil it down to just a few tried and true. First the bait, there's lots of good ones available and IMO just about anything edible will grab a canines attention. I've used a ton of different homebrew baits over the years from fresh killed squirrel to cracklins to fresh melon. The advantage of prepared baits is the stabilizers and preservatives that keep them "fresh" for a longer period plus a few lure type additives that increase appeal. Currently I'm pretty much sold on three that I like to keep in the bag Hiawatha Valley, Predator Plus and Widowmaker.
As for lures I'm trying to simplify and avoid buying everything that catches my eye. (They're called lures for a reason, lol) I want a good gland lure for each species coyote, red and grey fox plus a couple curiousity/food types. And no bag is complete without a skunky call type. Since I have yet to really pare down my list ill just list some I use and trust.
Dobbins RdFx is my go to gland lure for reds and general all purpose canine lure.. I also like his Digr. Violator 7 is an excellent coyote gland lure. Old Grey Buzzard from Dobbins will always have a place in my bag. Generally I prefer a paste type lure but June's Windwalker or whatever he's renamed it is as good as it gets in a liquid type. For skunky I like GHII or Voodoo.

In general terms; gland and urine are territorial markers = scent post ( can also be used at rub sets, again territorial or flat set ) food, curiosity are attractants they want to get, consume, make them work to get to the bait or lure = dirt hole, or covered by a rock or log = flat set. Call lures are strong odors used to attract from further away but can stimulate rolling = sets trap off without catch so should be above = just out of reach from set and behind = make them cross over the set or down a deep dirt hole . If you think about the relationship between where their eyes and noses are and where their feet are it should start to make sense.
There was/is a thread in the archive about lures & baits, where, when, what and why. Or something like that.
Maybe Wolfdog can bring it back up. Hope this helped.

I’m not a fan of call lures but I do consider the wind when setting. Set where they are going.

I use one lure for canines. It is a gland lure. It’s used at every set except blind sets. If they will rub on a stick, they will dig it out of a hole to rub on it.

Bait is used on coons, grinners and skunks. Cage, dog proofs and pocket sets.

Castor and sac oil for beaver.

No lure for Muskrats.
