I've seen the Lake Placid, NY ski jump in person. Not during the Olympic games , it was in the warm months.
No photos or videos does justice to just how tall and steep that thing is. After seeing it in person , everyone who goes down it definitely deserves a participation trophy or medal.

I drilled water wells in the adirondack park in 1985-87, I remember driving by the olympic ski jumps outside of lake placid.
I thought there's no way in heck I would try it, the ramp is steep, and so is the ground they land on, I thought how do they get stopped before hitting the trees along the highway.
On tv you see they stop long before the trees.
We could hear the snow machines blowing snow for the landing area when I shut the drilling rig off for the night, it was the last well I drilled up north, I finished that well during a back episode that ended my well drilling.
It was one of the hardest wells I drilled, lost the hole twice, ended up using a mud slurry and roller bit instead of air hammer bit, it took a week to get that new house a water well, normally one or two day job
