No colony traps allowed in New York State.

Our trappers association won't advocate
with the DEC Bureau of Wildlife to make them legal.

Well that makes no sense. People always worried about a pet/person or whatever being caught in “so called” dangerous traps. I’ve yet to see anyone get caught in a colony trap. Would be interesting to see how many rats you would have caught in that run with the three conibears. Why are they against them, worried you are going to make NY rats extinct? I think we had some of the better trapping regulations where I am. Always interesting hearing what other people can and cannot do. Keep after them!

Certain elements within the DEC Bureau of Wildlife are
hyper-sensitive to "fair chase" when considering trapping
regulations.
They consider colony traps an unfair advantage and therefore,
NOT FAIR CHASE, Makes no sense.

Meanwhile Our trappers association is a non-factor when
advocating for proactive trapper friendly regulations.

NYSTA is always worried about asking the State for anything
that might upset the status quo and so they do nothing.

Democratic politics also pay a major role in trapping regulations
as they control both houses of the state legislature and the governor.

If they had their way, trapping would be banned here.

We are living on borrowed time here in New York State.

Complain about the NYS Trappers Association all that you want, but the fact is that in a state as liberal as New York if it were not for NYSTA and the JTI Committee you would not be trapping today. Not everything is to our liking and there are some rules and seasons that I don't like, but thankfully I'm still trapping.

The whiners whine-that is what they do.
They never step up and volunteer their time and effort to the organization responsible for advancing trappers rights and opportunities.
Too much like work.
If their views were so popular with the membership they would be voted in with a landslide.

Was 6 for 9 at Skinner Creek Estuary so we had a total
catch of 11 rats from 17 sets with a couple 3 fired but empty sets.

Have a bunch of rats to flesh & stretch tomorrow and those 11 rats
to skin after their fur drys before the fans.

Supposed to blow tomorrow so probably won't get any more traps set
but we shall see.

I don't believe that's an accurate statement Bob. I urge you to get involved in your local club and go to the NYSTA Board meetings.

I disagree Robert.

But everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I'll be at the next board of directors on April 17th.

We don't have a local club in Jefferson County that is active and holds meetings.

I offer the lack of action on the adoption of snaring regulations
as an example of non-action by NYSTA on trapper friendly regulations.

NYSTA was pretty proactive in advocating for the elimination of a week
of our Northern Zone muskrat trapping season, though.

I'm glad to hear that you're going to the BOD meeting. All input is welcomed.

I believe Dave Miller had the snare/cable restraint bill pretty well locked up and his work was submarined by someone.

The 'rats here are mostly bitten and we have 10 days left in the season.

walleyed, good luck with your end of season run

I looked at NYSTA website and fb page just now and I saw nothing about the upcoming BOD meeting. Seems like the last entry of anything is from mid Feb. Maybe it's there, but I didn't see it

For your information the cable restraint bill was torpedoed by the New York Conservation Council..

How long ago was that, AL WEST ? 8 to 10 years ago ?

So that's it, a snare bill never again to be resubmitted in perpetuity ?

Sounds like just an excuse to provide cover for the real reason.

NYSTA leadership, JTI Chair Rockwood, and his master, who
happens to be a major regional NYS fiurbuyer, didn't want a
snaring bill in NYS to begin with behind the scenes.

As long as Rockwood remains JTI Chair, there will never snares/
or cable restraints, or however you want to sugar coat them,
used in New York State.

Prove me wrong AL WEST.

BTW this is a spring muskrat trapping thread.

If you want to argue, start your own thread and argue with yourself.

I don't want my thread deleted because you want to argue.

As upstateNY predicted, all the local stream emptying into Sandy Pond are at flood stage,
or have overflowed their banks and are chocolate milk in color.

Many of my traps today were completely submerged and unreachable.

I did catch four rats and two beaver from the ones I could reach out of 18 conibear and 2 330's.

The walleye spawning run is on between Sandy Pond and the South Pond in the YMCA creek
which connects the two water bodies.

Saw 3 to 4 dozen walleye with some around 10 pounds on the gravel with my polarized sunglasses.

It will be a few days until the water recedes and I can set a few more traps.

Time to flesh & stretch some more rats to get caught up.

Stay tuned.
