I’m curious about where they’re at. If any UP trappers catch a marten, where did you get them? I would like to catch one this next season, but haven’t seen any sign. Just wanna know if anyone has caught any close to where I am.

May God bless you and give you tight chains

I doubt anyone will tell you where they catch their fur.

I have marten show up on my bear baits on state land about a mile North of Genes pond. Down the gas pipeline if you look on google maps. Its not worth the hassle of setting and checking and then trying to get to Norway to register for me to mess with such a small limit. Have at it and good luck.

I’m not far from Iron Mountain. I’m not after anyone’s secret locations by any means, just general areas. Like I said, I would love to catch one, but I’m not gonna bend over backwards chasing them if they’re not around.

They used to get in my sets anywhere around Munising, Grand Marais and Manistique.

I would think you have them in your area in trapable numbers. Look along edges for tracks.....like between a cedar/black spruce swamp and a hardwood, green ridges with lots of hemlock, balsam, and spruce (white Spruce) thickets that form edges/breaks between them and more open hardwoods. If you have Marten, you shouldn't have any trouble finding tracks in the snow during season. Find tracks, set on tracks. Marten seem to not wander as far as Fisher do....you find fresh Fisher tracks and it may not swing back through until season is over. I set them up anyways just in case, but my trappiing buddy and I caught Marten 3 to 1 as far as Marten/ Fisher goes. Good luck.

Carney Lake is close to you and full of public ground. Start yourself a bear bait in the cedars somewhere close to a road for the convenience. Bait it every other day for the full baiting season and when trapping starts, you will have all the coon, skunk, possum, and marten in the area checking that spot out. Pay attention to the roads your driving after every rain and you will find enough wolf/coyote sign to keep your mind occupied in the off season. Run a camera on your bait. Most of the "locals" deer and grouse hunters have absolutely no clue as the the number of bear/bobcat/marten that are in that area. Paying attention to muddy roads and running cameras will show you what you want to know. Good luck and don't put alot of faith in what you hear from "locals" cry

Like was said-look for tracks in snow.
Marten hunt pretty much all the time,so they leave a lot of tracks when they are present.
Where I am they prefer older growth, mature mixed or evergreen bush with lots of coarse woody debris on the ground and 70+% overhead cover.
When looking for tracks in snow check all creeks with heavy willow type riparian growth crossing the backroads in this type of country.
Timbered drainages that connect older growth areas that run thru clearcuts or burns will funnel dispersing juveniles in november.A good place to make sets when no tracks are seen.
Google earth can be helpful in locating these features.

If that’s what I had to do to catch one Marten I would just go fishing.
