I suppose you could use a double fisherman's knot

ooooh, sorry, I misunderstood. Yes, sheet bend for sure.

I would imagine with rope going to fishing line you would have to go around the rope with the fishing line a few dozen times to get the rope to stay bent, but certainly doable I think!

Very educational on how to use the picks. I do think you are a bit crazy.

Thnx.

And I've been accused of that. When I showed my sister the video she said "well, at least he's done it before!".

Great video. I went through in Feb up to my chest and could not feel the bottom. I was darn lucky to power out with my elbows. First attempt, my one elbow broke through and I thought I was in real trouble. I lucked out and must have gotten a thick edge which supported me. I did not crawl out but stood up, because I didn't know any better. I was getting REAL cold and hypothermia was setting in by the time I reached my truck. Made an ice pick and packed a flotation device, and rope for next trip. I was alone on the ice; another bad move.....

Good to hear you survived the ordeal. Lots didn't this year.

Good video Hutchy.......nice list of things to have. I don’t have a float coat....but have the ice pics around my neck....and never go ice fishing alone. And I don’t chop ice for beaver.

Do your next one at 40 below.(Keep your change of clothes and dry felts inside your sleeping bag stashed on shore)

It's a good idea. I think it would add realism for sure. I think my outer layers freezing solid would be a good challenge. At least at those temps everything isn't soaking wet, and making a fire is actually easier.

Anything for views!

Actually this is a good idea and will probably be a video that does well. And you did a good job of showing and explaining this.

Good video.I fell through many years ago on my way out ice fishing.Luckily,I had my trapping basket on to carry my gear,,and that kept me from going all the way under.I still went in up to my chest and it instantly took my breath away like I got punched in the gut.I had no ice pics, but managed to get out.It was ten below and windy. My cloths froze instantly and I looked like the Tin Man waddling back to shore. My truck wasn't far,,so I made it to the truck and got the heat going.I go out much more prepared now days,,and your video has a lot of good tips.

thanks upstate.

I too have done the walk back when your clothes are so froze you cannot get them off till they thaw!

A trapping buddy went through once with a pack basket full of traps, and he went right down...managed to come straight up though.

Great video , Hutchy. I have never had the pleasure, of going all the way in. A few soakers , with waders on , were enough for me. Keep them coming. I still have to figure out how , to subscribe. Can you tell us how. old243

What Bernie said. I think you can also just have a youtube account.

I have a lot of trapping footage from fisher/marten season too. Hoping to put out a ton of other trapping videos as well. Maybe even some nuisance stuff.

I never had the capability to do video. Have spent more time than most playing in cold water though. Trust me you won't be as quick to get in as you get older.. LOL!
Is very good video though and I applaud you my man..
I might even steal or use parts of it show some of the people I work with.
Thanks for posting.
I do have a similar simple home made version of the picks your using. I've used lots different picks over years don't think ever bought any.

The ice picks are a must. Trying to pull yourself out with only your fingernails is impossible. Having gone through myself, these days whether beaver trapping or ice fishing I wear a life jacket or flotation jacket when on ice. Also, if wearing snowshoes I wear them like slippers without the heel strap, so I can kick out of them should I go through.I wouldb rather lose them than my life.
