Hard maple tree would be my guess. Seen it many times as a logger

Some of those branches are awfully small to support a porky. I've seen pack rats do that in Nebraska. I suppose a maple tastes sweet to them.

I’d think a porky was nearby.

I’d put a cage with some salt in it below that tree if it’s a porky you will catch it.

I've had Porkies kill trees in my yard doing that. I had a real nice single trunked serviceberry inside my chicken coop run, and a Porky moved in and killed it in about 2 nights. I never laid eyes on it actually eating the bark, and that tree/shrub was stripped just as heavy as the one in the photo. I have a zillion squirrels too, and have never seen them chew bark like that. Roy, did you see squirrels gnawing on the tree?

Just look at the droppings under the tree to see what rodent is doing it. Most times a porky will live in a tree for quite some time so it's easy to spot it up there in the bare branches.

porcupines can get out on limbs about the size of my thumb in diameter.

that definitly looks like porky damage

maybe get a roll of aluminum flashing and wrap the trunk for a 4-6 feet and see if the tree will recover use washer head screws to attach it and just make sure to get them all out later
