Went in the basement today and there was a 2' black snake. I had my hands full so I went to the garage, came back to get it, and of course it was gone. Any easy trap to make to catch them? I don't feel like moving everything around until I finally find it. Thanks.

A glue trap works good on a small snake like that.

I’ve got two 6 footers that come and go from under the deck to the firewood pile. See them almost daily.
Cats are not welcome round here.
Black snakes are mouse eating machines.

Put a stick on its neck then pick it up and take it outside and let it go!

You could try the glue traps and place an egg on them as bait.

You probably know this, but those snakes are good snakes. They'll take care of mice, rats, and will also eat venomous snakes

And quail, young rabbits, eggs out of the chicken coup, and young chicks. They only need to eat every few weeks so are limited on the mouse killing they do.

Normally they get a pass unless they are by the chicken house.

it will leave on its own when it starts staying warm at night. black snakes are harmless to humans. unless you have a pet parakeet or mice no pet worries either. I wouldnt worry to much about it. Next time you see it just grab it. Bite is like the bite of a catfish.

yep, and welders gloves help keep all that bacteria off your hands/abrasions. I've been known to encourage/get them to bite the welder glove so THEN I can easily grab em behind the head to control em from then on.

Seriously though, the Cahaba Snake trap from WCS works with a LARGE sticky pad inside.

Or make your own out of downspout material or even cardboard.

WCS is the sponsor of the ADC forum here so go there and click on their link to see the Cahaba. or find it on Amazon possibly.

I watched a 5 ft rat snake go into a Cahaba in our living room one night about 1 am. It was awesome and I couldn't believe it at the time.

Just looking for a warm spot overnight and a meal ... harmless snake, They will leave the house once it warms up enough. Probably still moving slow.
My parents have several that like to Winter in their basement. We just leave them alone they eat the Mice and leave during the Warm spring/Summer.

I've never tried trapping a snake but I have raised chickens. I had a snake come in my nest pen to eat the eggs and he swallowed a golf ball I had in the nest and couldn't squeeze back through the wire in the pen. I don't know if it would work on a small snake or not though.

I had a garden snake know my basement once. Went to get it to put outside and it struck fast and furious. Can't have that in the house with the kids. There was a 9" pair of pliers on the shelf and one quick strike withers them and it was much easier to put outside.

"Rat" strength glue boards . I used corrugated plastic boards( old political Sheriff signs)
Gorilla tape a section of gutter to the plastic board signing on one side so the gutter is a tunnel on top. Cut rat strength glue boards to the inside base plastic. Making a sticky tunnel.

If you want to release the snakes unharmed .take them to where you want to let them go and Spray them with Pam/ cooking spray. The cooking oil melts the glue.

I leave rat snakes alone, get rid of them and something nasty might take its place
