Be careful Walnut can be very toxic. Make sure you ware a good mask when sanding or plaining. Do not use any part of the Walnut for horse bedding. This is what I have been told by horse people.

Everything about walnut is beautiful, including the smell. People can get as excited as they want about mahogany, but it's got nothing on walnut.

Walnut also looks great when put in contrast with other light-colored hardwoods. Hackberry is a good candidate around here:

Wood working with walnut is one of my favorite, the the dust kills me. Gun Nut

In 2001 I built all the cabinetry for my gun store out of Claro walnut from northern CA. Probably my favorite wood to work with, especially gunstocks. The dust never bothered me but I've heard that too.

Good walnut is my favorite. I have a hundred or so bf stashed away for something in the future.
