Anyone have any left? I remember as a young kid many folks down by my Grandparents in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas having roosters tied out. Many farms. I also remember reading in the KC star about busts and making it illegal. I have always wanted some and have 96 egg in the incubator and 10 chicks I already bought.
Mine will be Hatch, Greys, Roundheads, Kelso, a few Black(warhorse). We have a strong hispanic population around this area and I figure my market should pay for what I raise. I also like the broodiness of the hens and how they protect their chicks. I watched some videos of BL Cozad down in Oklahoma and really am thankful there are a few Americans left like him.

Got a cousin who raised them. Not sure if he still does. I imagine his USDA job might have been in jeopardy if they knew.

There are quite a few breeders left in So TX. They claim to only be breeders.

I like gamefowl. I think they're beautiful, easy to keep and smart chickens. I like the fact they set and brood well. I've raised a lot of gamefowl and Indian Asils. I never fought mine. I sold all of mine a few years ago. The problem I ran into is that most of the people who wanted to buy them were very clear that they wanted to fight them. I have nothing against someone fighting their roosters. I think it's stupid that it's illegal. I could never find a good answer on if I had any sort of liability for selling to someone who wanted to fight them, so I chose not too. Most of the market for gamefowl is Hispanic, Malaysian, Filipino, Indian and good old Hillbilly.

I was at a guy's farm Monday, who was setting up 40 barrels with stags. I wish he wasn't doing it because I buy a huge amount of rabbit and other animals to make pet food out of from him and he's probably bound to get in trouble with the stags.

I recommend knowing your laws and avoiding doing anything with gamefowl, that even has the semblance of being illegal. People talk to much.

Keith

There is absolutely no legal problems raising them. It is just another right people think they have lost. Most of the legal cases are based on intent to fight. People have placed animals on the same dominion as man and that is not how God set it. I have only ever had a single game fowl hen and it was the best mother I had ever seen. I wanted more and will raise more. Illegal immigrants are pouring over the border and we are paying for their hotels. I plan to sell them chickens and let them do what they want with them. Tyson raises chickens and I don't tell them how to cut them up.

Did Oklahoma finally pass the law that you could fight them so long as you put miniature boxin gloves over their spurs? grin

Love gamefowl. We have been breeding gamefowl for years. Mostly hatch, asil, grays and blacks. I am selling out next month, if anyone has any interest, pm me.

What worried me was that many people, who I just met, wanting to purchase the gamefowl I was selling, would tell me they intended to fight them. Fighting gamefowl does not bother me at all, except for the legality. From my reading of the laws, once I knew what they wanted the gamefowl for, it was likely illegal for me to sell them roosters. Does anyone know definitely?

I've run into a similar issue with people buying goats milk, which I can legally only sell for other uses than human consumption. Once someone tells me they intend to drink the milk, I can't legally sell it to them. People talk to much.

That's a fact Keith. I don't know why people want to talk so much about doing something illegal (even when it shouldn't be illegal. It's a liability issue for you. Just keep your trap shut about things that could get someone else in trouble. I think you could deny knowledge and be OK, unless someone recorded you. There's always that possibility.

I keep gamefowl and am an avid breeder of several old strains and a few of my own making. I know quite a few folks who also keep gamefowl. Every states laws are slightly different then you have federal laws as well. Owning gamefowl is not illegal. Raising them for sale to fight, fighting them, or even spectating at a fight is where the law comes in.

Being recorded selling to someone who says they were buying the gamefowl for fighting always worried me, so I would not sell to people who told me that. Most people told me that was why they wanted to buy them. I never asked why they wanted the game fowl or even hinted that I wanted to know. They would then get angry when I would not sell to them. I see absolutely no good reason to tell someone you just met, that you're going to comitt an illegal activity. I don't see a good reason to tell someone you've known for a very, very long time that you're going to commit an illegal activity, unless they absolutely need to know either.

I've wanted some for years but they seem to mostly only exist in the South. Beautiful birds and I love they maintain their wild instincts. I've read some real horror stories about people being accused of raising them for fighting, seems an accusation is basically enough to have your life turned upside down.

A few years ago, HSUS along with a SWAT team, searched his house and arrested a 66 year old man with an air tank for breeding gamefowl.
