I am in the market for a decent pellet gun.
Mostly squirrels...

Not sure if .177 or 22

I am most concerned about accuracy. It needs to be consistent.

What have you folks used and what would you suggest.

22 Benjamin pump up #392S I bought one in high school a half century ago seals gave out about six years ago. Dime size groups @ 30 yards were the norm. Killed a ton of squirrels and rabbits with it. Head shots no problem.

392S is the current edition of the old 392 wood stocked model I bought, the new one has a synthetic stock, got to look all tactical don’t ya know?
I have a .22 break bbl walther “falcon “ spring piston 1000+FPS with lead.
And a benjaman .22 nitro trail break bbl nitro Piston 1000+FPS with lead. Neither one is as accurate as the original but they still get the job done.

I much prefer .22 to .177 for hunting. I just like a little heavier pellet. Darn near any of them these days will be accurate enough for squirrels and rabbits sized game with head shots. Look for a .22 with 1000-1200+fps. Put a decent scope on it so the recoil doesn't screw them up and go shoot 1000 pellets to be sure its broke in. I see no reason to spend over $350 all in with scope and pellets.

I have a Benjamin Mararuder in 22cal. I hunt squirrels a lot. I have no idea how many I have taken with it, but it has been many.

I have not used a 22 rim fire since I got the air rifle. It is pretty accurate and is very quiet. You can have multiple squirrels up the same tree and pick them off one by one.

If I had to do it again I would get the same gun but in a 25 cal. the 22 works but there have been time's I have had to do a follow-up. I don't know if they still do but they used to have a green mountain barrel on the 25, and they said it was more accurate than the 22.

Did all my hunting with .177 I don't think it's that bad I wouldn't use it. I used a wad cutter and killed many squirrels out of the top of trees.

I have a Marauder in 22 and a Kratos in 25. I like them both but the 25 has much more punch to it. They are sure fun to shoot and not think about wasting ammo and accuracy is unbelievable.

Air Arms 410 in .22 Was the most accurate I have ever had . I used to clear golf courses of rabbits with it and have killed a lot of them with that rifle. It shot just sub sonic and I had a suppressor on it making it very quiet.

Try the new ballistic tips. No squirrel running off with one of those thru him from ribs forward .

My boy recovered some of those. Some still had the tip and the ones that didn't were barely deformed.

These were .22 at 850fps. Marketing fad. They don't move fast enough to open up.

I have a Ruger Blackhawk(I know it's a popular pistol, lol), It's a .177 single breakover, and it is accurate with iron sights. Most of these intermediate guns need to have a special scope, but if you get into the "big boy" guns with compressed air they MAY be more forgiving, all depends what you want to spend.

I got my boys each a Benjamin maximus pcp on sale for 135 each and free shipping. Accurate and deadly not breaking the bank. Used them for trap line last season. Worked flawlessly.

Can also depend on the pellet you shoot...we have some looks like a bb jacketed in plastic, and they will shoot through a 55 gal drum!
