I spent 8 years in Iowa City, High School and College. Lots of good people, good churches, and good opportunities if you can screen out the b.s. and survive the Professors with a negative outlook on life. I've heard the university referred to as the Berkley of the Midwest due to the burning down of the English building during the Vietnam war riots, but that bent is alive across all college campuses. I think my education at the university was worth way more than I paid in in-state tuition. I was a business student and coming into the work force, I was head and shoulders above a lot of Mountain West grads that I was working with early in my career. I have a lot of friends that graduated with Masters in Education and never heard anything negative from them about their programs. But, it is like that across the MidWestern Big 10 schools... Iowa/Wisconsin/Michigan/Minnesota/Northwester/Ohio St/Penn State/Purdue... the education is solid. My mother still lives in Iowa City and I don't think she ever wants to live anywhere else. There are lots of things to do both cultural and athletic. Many different areas to live Iowa City vs. Coralville vs. North Liberty vs. University Heights and a couple of State Parks and really cool small towns within 30 minutes. Food has really improved in Town over the last 20 years. The staples of Hamburg Inn for breakfast and Pagliai's pizza are still around with some good ethnic food downtown. Plus the OxYoke inn is just a few minutes down the Highway for family style German food in the Amana Colonies. To bottom line it, I would be happy with my kids going there, and hope they choose a midwestern big 10 school if they don't.
