Around here we call it a Black snake, will we have to change the name?
I got myself a seniors' GPS. Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination, it tells me why I wanted to go there.

It's a black rat snake as stated. It's a big snake, but not as big as the pic makes it seem. It's about 5 feet long. It's a zoomed in cell phone pic. Some people had the thing being 15 feet long and as thick as a mans leg.
It was seen in Frick Park in Pittsburgh and the city actually put out a warning about it. The people from the zoo were laughing when they were asked to identify it.

It's black rat snake, commonly called a black snake, at least around here.
I do general contracting work at a large, remote resort in the Poconos. It is loaded with black snakes there. The in-house crew used to warn me about them. While they are not overly aggressive they will bite if they feel threatened. They are great climbers and can turn up in the most unexpected places. They get pretty big too.
Eh...wot?

Would they put a big wound on you if they bit you on arm or leg ? Any one on here ever been bitten by a black rat snake ?What was it like? MD Barely feel it. They don’t make big wounds or take chunks. Been bitten by a few of the bigger ones just bleeds a lot at first then all is fine. I’ve had worse bee stings.

MD They have lots os short needle like teeth to hold their prey with. Some will picture the skin leaving a V shaped line of little punctures . The teeth are angled back, so don't pull as it will hurt you and the snake. wait for it to let go with it will do is a matter of seconds. Disinfect the spot where you got tagged, and get on with your day.

Use to get 8 bucks a foot for them if they were over 5 foot long. That was in the 80's. Got bit in the cheek by a good size one when I was just a pup. Mom spit on a hanky and wiped it off and sent me on my way.

A guy was messing with a small one (two-footer maybe) we rescued from a window well He was holding it in front of his face talking baby talk to it. It struck him on the nose. It must have stung a little because the guy was tearing up a bit. It was pretty funny.

I saw a small garter snake here in elk county the other day. No buzz worms yet though.
I've been bit by black rats a few times. Like was said above if you don't try to yank one that has attached itself to you, you should be good. I usually clean the bite mark pretty good just incase.
The ones that get me creeped out are those ones that thing they're bigger than they are and think they can swallow you. That kind of chewing motion they make is really odd feeling.

They don’t make big wounds or take chunks. Been bitten by a few of the bigger ones just bleeds a lot at first then all is fine. I’ve had worse bee stings. This. No worse than briar scratches. We call them chicken snakes in Alabama, but Grey rat snakes is what the pet stores call then. I've caught or removed hundreds and probably the only non venomous in the south that ain't bit me. I don't know about all but lots non venomous snakes have an anti coagulate so you bleed like a stuck pig instead of the usual beads of blood from Brian's. I had a big one in my small shop that came back every year for coons ages and had a small bb size yellow dot on its side right behind its head. My wife called it Matilda.

It did, I didn't. snake and student were fine.
