I haven't seen anything here on T'man about this rumor. Is there any truth to it; that at some recent sale or auction castor sold for $150 a pound for #1 grade?

$140 cdn is as high as I've heard here. It may go higher,it has been creeping up steadily for quite a while now. Probably more to do with de-valued NA currency. That just a guess though.

With the price increase in castor, mink and muskrat glands, how many will be forced to increase bait and lure prices. At that price, I could no longer make Backbreaker. I'd use my own castor and make it for my own use only. There's no way folks are going to pay $50 for a four ounce bottle of Backbreaker, I don't care how good it is.

There are some that would pay twice that. Some lures have an almost cult following and that is one of them.

I remember putting Dominion Soudack out of business years ago. In those days I always asked for advances and castor had gone up over $100/lb. If I remember right (a rarity anymore), I got advanced $80/lb and then suddenly the price dropped down to about $35. DS was holding about 30# of my castor. Shortly after DS went out of business...with me owing the firm money.
I always figured it was me that put them out of business.

I think people would pay $50 for four ounces of lure Paul. You don’t use a ton of it and it catches you more beaver. Now, putting it in cat or coyote bait, that’s not worth it. I think a lot of people are about to find out how good home made or natural baits are.

Paul, if they're making $150.00 a pound selling castor, smart trappers may buy Backbreaker at $50.00 a bottle because they can make their investment back. Keith

I use BC in Widowmaker bait, and several of my top selling canine lures also. The price of the raw ingredients has gone up more in the last 3 years than in the 34 years prior to that I was in biz. Started in 1984.
This is a terrible trend.

trade castor for lure would work out well for both parties. I'd be up for that. Except Paul doesn't want northern castor. He says southern beaver don't like the smell of a northener. lol

Buying raw ingredients is the same as buying in that they are a "commodity" and as such are prone to commodity pricing. Bye-sell-trade. I scored big back in 2001 at just under $20/lb (seller was happy and I was happy) for 825 lbs. I bought all he had and I am very glad I did/could. That castor is now 20 years old and like fine bourbon.... gets sweeter with age. I've used over 3/4's of that acquisition however and should I need to buy more... I'll hopefully trade.
Blessings, Mark
