I not ready for dipping or even have all traps close to dip an not warm enough, I bought 2 cans crown brand white fuel at Walmart for gas laterns or stoves, this the right stuff? 4 to 1 is kinda thick, what is best, 5 to 1 or 6 to 1? With a garden hose sprayer an brush, clean mud if traps, there is a thin build up in places an impossible to wire brush off or all off chain, not a big deal a thin layer dry mud in spots ?

6 to 1 is probably about right. Get your traps as clean as you can, but don't obsess about it. Your dye might not stick well in those spots, but the first coon you catch is going to wear it off anyway.

When I dip, I just hose em off with a pressure washer. .ix the stuff pretty thin, but our can always dip twice if you think it's not thick enough.

Andi recommend finding some kids to do all the work for you, that stuff is messy.

If you think you want them cleaner and don't have enough pressure from your hose.. Take them to the car wash dump them on the grate and pay the machine and wash them off. I used to do that before I had a pressure washer of my own.. Still had to pick grass off some of the ones possum wound it on. Not sure how them buggers knit the grass on a trap like they do. But some grass can't even blow off with pressure washer.
When I dip traps I use a old water type stainless steel fire extinguisher, that I cut the top off.. If you can find one they don't want antique price for, an old cream can will work too. Why tall and narrow ? Because I learned a long time ago tall narrow wax or dip pot works with less wax or dip. So I use that tall narrow can that the trap just fits in you don't need as much dip.. Can't dip 5 traps at once like might in turkey fryer pot..but don't need 5 gallons dip either.
Some things to think about hope might help.
Good luck!

Mac

You should just mix it the same as you have for last 20+ years dave. No reason to change if you have been happy with it that long. I used to use just the cheapest pump gas with good results, just added more dip or gas as needed to the same old 5 gallon bucket. Did it that way for years, then that bucket got spilled so I decided to start a new one with white gas because of the people on here saying it was better, ended up with a sticky stinky mess on my traps that never dried hard and was nasty to work with. Never went back to speed dip again. All Formula 1 for me now if I dip traps. Mixes with water and dries hard and slick every single time.

That was Stoes Black Speed Dip. KBL dip or other colors of gas based dip probably act differently with various gases.

Ya there tacky an sticky for months, even in early season the land connibears in sun are tacky a little but dry up, , protect metal good, no idea how mine is mix but old an in cans mix with fuel an goop on bottom, I use a dye kettle, I have 2 new cans speed dip is why I got white gas ,probly mix 5.5 to 1 or 5 to 1 with a little thinner that, I think 4 to 1 is to thick, old stuff probly 7 plus to 1 or more thinner, I don't use speed dip traps in canine if did do any, probly work a little but if k 9 trapping, I probly go logwood on clean traps an oderless wax , I don't like wax traps on connibears on land an none in water wax, some leave rusted. An wax an set , not like wax water traps

It's up to you but if it were me I'd take back that white gas and just buy gas at the gas station. I saw absolutely advantage to the white gas, none.

Dave, don't even think about using gasoline in your speed dip. With all the additives in gasoline,it does not work well with speed dip.Years ago when speed dip came out, this wasn't true.
White gas does not have all the garbage in it. Yes it costs more, but it will cost you a lot more if you use gasoline and ruin all the work you put in to dipping.

White gas does not have corn in it Dave. Thats one of the things that screwed up gasoline for the use in speed dip.

N.E Iowa should have a Kwik Trip with 100 percent gas.My biggest problem was the black speed dip.Never does harden. The brown speed dip is a different formula In my opinion-works great.

I didn't have good luck with black either. The brown however works very well for me mixed with gasoline. I mix it 6 to 1.

Yeah I think my black is up to 6-7 to 1 and never does set up but the brown at 3 to 1 dries hard.

I dilute as needed, but I also add more as I go.I also keep up stirring. I have not run into the problems you have. And Over many years I have dipped thousands of traps.
If it didn't work well for me,I would have discontinued usin it a long time ago.

I use 93 octane with the brown dip(stoes). Dip BEFORE june. Hang it out in the air to dry! Not in a tote or bin.

When warmer good weather come up I dip in May before end of around memorial day an hang under tree for few days , it takes months for brown to dry so if grab trap an run hand hard or squeeze metal in humid weather , that no residue on hand , well speed dip pentrate rust metal in more heavy surface rust spots or run off those spots ? Paint night be better but lot more didle around
