So my neighbor is dealing with red squirrels and asked me if I could help rid or at least thin the heard somewhat. Thought I would use a few weasel boxes with sunflower seeds and place them where birds would be least temped to enter. My question is how big of a hole do I need for a red squirrel to enter a weasel box?

1 3/4 to 2 inch should be sufficient.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

Ya, that's what I was afraid of. The holes in my boxes are only 1 1/4".

Squirrel snare poles work pretty good (running poles). There used to be some posts about it from Trapper Ron I think.

Me and the grand kids took out 82 one summer by using leaning pole sets with #1 sized traps and peanut butter for bait.
We also nailed some Victor rat traps to the side of the trees and caught a few that way.

Oh-I'm quite sure they would. Used a Forster bit and made them 1 1/2". Under the conditions I'm working with I think I'll try the boxes first. I'm sure the snares would work but I know she would never handle seeing a critter hanging form anything. With the boxes it's out of site, out of mind.

I think you may still struggle with 1.5” holes. Not saying you won’t catch some, but you will have refusals at that size.

That may be so but hate to see the old woman freak out on me. I have a few small live traps I can use but don't need her to see me dispatch them.

If you have a 2” bit you might try that. That’s what I changed to and it seems to help.
