The wolf set from the ATA manual where the wolf trap is set then the trapper runs over it with snowmobile. That sounds like a great set but when I try it the paddei always digs the trap out and springs it. Is that set only good for old timer snowmobiles?

You may want to pack down your trail first and let it get hard, after a couple of days the snow should harden. After the trail is packed down and hard can set your trap. Just make sure to put it far enough below the level of the trail packed snow to let your sled and tracks go over without setting it off

Yep, like Fool said. Make it in an already frozen trail. I haven't had much luck with it; if I get any fresh snow and drive over it again it still gets packed and frozen in. With no fresh snow and consistent cold it'll keep working
. Thats my limited experience.

The big paddles keep setting it off. How would it work if I just pulled my sled over it by hand.

Muskrat is your trail not frozen hard? Once a trail sets up I can recess the trap so it doesn't spring. But I only have like 1" paddles I think. Yes you could also pull your sled over it by hand to blend it in.

Sounds like you might have two or maybe three issues going on. My first thought is your trap isnt bedded deep enough. I bed mine so they lay flat 1/2 to 1 inch below a packed trails surface. Also check the pan tension on your traps. It should take 5-7 pounds pressure before your trap fires. If you are running real long paddles this set is not going to work for you. If thats the case try this. Pick your set location on a straight stretch of trail. Make the set from the back of your skimmer. When you come back down the trail, dont drive over the set. Go to one side in a loop kind off. The idea is to make it easier for a wolf to follow the straight trail. Hope that explanation is clear enough. Its a modification of the set you drive over, and one of my most productive wolf sets. This is how I make it. The trail closest to the bush is the one I travel on. Big traps are best for this set because you can leave them for a long time and still catch wolves. I like the Koro #9

Does it throw the trap in your sled with all the snow? smile

When we first wrote and published the manual, there were very few paddle tracks around.

Unless you can find (or dig) a deep bed for the trap, a paddle track will set the trap off. As you have found out the hard way!

Im running 1.5 inch paddles and have no problem. Longer paddles will be an issue though.

you may want to make a side trail like a turn around on a road. The wolves will take the shortest route when traveling your trail.

I ordered the new ATA manual I'm readying it now. Next year I will try that trail trick for wolves.

Would a price of old snowmobile track placed over the trap work hood to conceal disturbance or would it have to be the same pattern track?

I would be hesitant to change the track pattern. I have seen my dog team react to a change in snogo track patterns so I am pretty sure a wolf will notice it at the very least

I wouldn't worry about trying to make track patterns over your set. I have gone on trails and wolves have ran on the fresh trails with tracks and taken the shortest route on the trail where there is old snowmachine trail covered over with snow.
