For those that have been successful, what would you say the difficulty level is between elk and whitetail deer? Both animals from ground level?

No Jab.

Never hunted whitetail.
Hunting elk can be a huge challenge especially if you're not used to high elevations.

Never hunted a whitetail

In general it's easier ( not easy ) to get within bow range of an elk than a mature mule deer buck in a non-baited situation

I have bowhunted elk twice in my years with no success. Whitetails are much easier.

Elk are harder to find, but easier once you get in them.

Not as jumpy for lack of a better word.

Whitetails are easier to find but, wired tighter.

In my opinion it’s not even close. A whitetail on the ground is way harder than an elk. They are always ready to turn inside out. Bull elk in the rut can sometimes seem plain stupid in comparison to a jumpy whitetail buck.

Elk are herd animals, it's usually best to not sneak in slowly, like with deer, they are used to thumps and other movement noises, move in quickly and hope the wind holds
