Id go with propane for ease of use. I built mine out of a 50 lb propane tank, cut openings in it and line with 2 inches of kaowool, coated with fireplace cement. I heat mine with a venturie burner (naturally asperated) from hybrid burners. I got the 3/4" t rex and like it alot. But you can make your own from off the shelf plumbing parts. If using old tanks for the forge body obviously be safe and pull the valve then fill with water before attempting to cut it. Goto bladeforum.com there is lots of guys there who know lots more than me. Also I would recommend not investing to much time in trying to use unknown steels to make knives, buy some w1 drill rod for knives so you know how to heat treat it. It will dramatically shorten the learning curve.

Some of my favorite hunting knives started out as high carbon steel saw blades that were rusty . They were made by a old cowboy that if I remember correctly used a grinder to cut out the original shape then he used a belt sander .
Even the sheaths are a work of art the likes I've never seen before or since .
