Depends on price and your family's miles driven per year.
I bought a 98 honda accord that only had 89k miles for $3,200 drove it 3 years. It had 189k on it when it dropped a valve. I will probably get 200$ when I take it to the scrap yard. It worked out great.
I bought a 97 ranger with 52k miles on it last year for $3,200. To me it's a $1,500truck but as you said vehicle prices are crazy. I drove it 5k miles when the motor blew. I had a jasper rebuilt in it, got the ac system, hoses belts, breaks, bearings, rotors, shocks sway bar end links replaced. Now I have $11k in that truck worth $1500. Makes the 30k trucks look like a bargain.
Some times it works out other time you can get in deeper than planned trying to save money. Neither will be great on fuel cost. It would boil down to vehicle condition and what would suit the wife and kids needs the best.

Why a suburban or pickup if you got your trap vehicle covered? To haul dogs and kids you could get a mini van or something lots cheaper with less miles. A new ford escape is about 25 grand.

It all depends on how well they have been maintained. I sold an 03 f-150 with 300,000 km on it for 6g in 2017-it was in great condition with not a speck of rust.Had the 5l engine and i see the guy I sold it to still driving it around.

I have a 2010 yukon xl we bought a year ago for $13,000 5.3 loaded with 130,000 miles then. Wife loves it, 17 or 18 mpg around town. Only thing I was told when looking was stay away from the gm engines that shut off cylinders to save fuel, they have problems. I dont mind buying a vehicle with high miles as long as it isnt rusty. This^^^^ Had a Silverado that dropped a cylinder bc of that. There’s a bypass kit for it now.

When we were running around kids, we had a Yukon xl. Love it! Traded for a Malibu, for better gas mileage. When the kids left. I miss the Yukon. I think it had 230000 miles on it. It did need a little work.

I’d buy a burb for your situation. I don't know if I'd take advice on what to drive from a guy who drives a lesbian-mobile. 340k on my 03 - F150 and still going. All original drive train, not even a check engine light. I bought it several years ago with 185k for $3500 cash. You'd probably better have Dave undercoat that thing. It's rust free. I mean the rust didn't cost anything extra. lol No rust on the box though! it's fiberglass. Only on the cab corners.

Used vechile prices must be sky high, I see the shop I go to is swamped always an book out a week ahead on repairs, , expanded shop an parklot an sell used vechiles, lot sales, any vechile that gas or not big truck with 340 k on it, it life is got be on borrow time, lots things at shop upcoming, likemine, could spend bundle on it an then after all spent, motor dies, an out lot money, if I got 300 k out my pickup ,I be satisfied , 3 more years maybe without a payment, a 6 or 8 cyl might be better than a 4 cyl, not sure on motor life
