Attack happened adjacent to Baker’s Hole Campground. I’ve stayed there many times. The entire area along the Madison there is thickly vegetated, with lots of downed trees from beavers & such. Basically, you can’t see far & need to be ever vigilant of your surroundings.

A spray can against a grizzly? Naw, no way!
In the early 80's my cousin's husband carried me to an appliance store of all place's in Chicago while we were visiting family up there, the owner was a big game hunter and only killed trophy sized animals, he had EVERYTHING you could imagine in that store. What stuck with me though was a monster sized grizzly mounted in there, newspaper clipping at it's feet told the story of his guide getting killed by it before he could kill the grizz.
Horrible way to go and sorry for the family.
Not my circus, not my clowns.

The article I read said that bear spray residue was found on his clothing so apparently he was able to deploy it.
I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

It bothers me that they describe the guy as a "guide." It's true that he works as a guide but he was fishing on his own when he was killed, not actively working as a guide. If I was killed by a griz while hunting elk would the headline be "Engineer killed by bear?" I don't think so. It seems to me to be intentionally misleading by masking the danger that bears present to folks fishing in the area. The author was most likely using the term "guide" just to illustrate that the person killed, had a lot of experience in the woods.
