Speed dip does not penetrate. It is a coating like paint.
I thin the it over recommendation. And dip often.
Never used a pressure washer or a hose.
BUT, I am a beaver trapper .

I dip traps today, stake tops, stands, be plates, next season, need get new can dip, connibears turn out just ok except few rust spots show though 110s, I dip twice within 2 hrs, water footholds. Rust show though, not bad rust, probly ok a year. Unless spray paint them later.

What is a heavier rust spot?
Yes remove flaking rust
Maybe a wire brush

Speeddip will not adhere to clean metal.

I've used a 50 / 50 mix of water and vinegar to loosen up rust on traps. Let them soak overnight, then take them out and hose them off. Soak them longer if you need, depending on the amount of rust you are dealing with.

Vinegar is acetic ? To much work wire brush all them traps on lil rust spots here an there, I guess spray paint after if problem, I think I soak trap tags in vinegar or something to take shine off, never again as ruin half them, so if dip too heavy surface rust, is rust trap in an make metal worse ?

Coon, I have a great idea for you. Call the manufacturer! All these product questions you have, call the manufacturer. You never listen to any advice you are given. If you are not going to listen, no need to ask for advice.

Why not just logwood dye or walnut hulls? Then no worry about the rust. Or go to harbor freight and buy a cement mixer and toss them in with some gravel or blasting media.

I already got old dip on traps, I used boil years back, wax, worse yet an hasssle an dangerous, I not buy cement mixer just for traps, speed dip is about cheapest dip an probly one better for protection against more rust

I have a trap in an ice cream pail of 100% vinegar right now. 1 night did a pretty good job, but I'm debating about a 2nd night. I'll have to see how good vinegar cleans the coil springs. It's amazing the power of vinegar. I threw some rusty tools in with the trap, & some rusty fasteners like sleep easy hooks, and they came out nice. Water trapping sure is hard on those sleep EZ spring clips threads.
