I have a few issues with this article. I have spent more time in bear country than most, and I would never carry bear spray for a few reasons. Yes it does work. Sometimes. The problems arise when it doesnt. The problem I have with the article is that it says they dont know if the spray was used. I call bull on that statement. The fact that the safety tab was off is a good indication. All they would have to do to know, is shake the can. Ive seen this kind of stuff before. They never want to admit that it didnt work and will twist things to muddy the waters. The last thing they want is for people to throw the spray away and buy a handgun. Feel sorry for the guide and his family. I've been in that exact situation more than once and its never fun when you get to close to a kill. A friend of mine died that way and he had a rifle, but it was stuffed inside his pack instead of in his hand where it should have been.

Yep. I would rather have a handgun or if possible a shotgun with slugs or a rifle.

I agree the bear biologist here really like to push spray. I think spray is meant for women and children,or people who aren't proficient with firearms.

I would much rather have a gun than a spray bottle. Was told that it works while working as a fish count technician. I questioned whether they have used it and they said no. I told them I will keep my rifle and ditch the bear spray.

Just hope the wind is not blowing in your direction if you are using spray. If it is your just going to spray your self and add seasonings for the bear. Big lead throwers would be my preferred option.

Attack happened adjacent to Bakerís Hole Campground. Iíve stayed there many times. The entire area along the Madison there is thickly vegetated, with lots of downed trees from beavers & such. Basically, you canít see far & need to be ever vigilant of your surroundings.

A spray can against a grizzly? Naw, no way!

In the early 80's my cousin's husband carried me to an appliance store of all place's in Chicago while we were visiting family up there, the owner was a big game hunter and only killed trophy sized animals, he had EVERYTHING you could imagine in that store. What stuck with me though was a monster sized grizzly mounted in there, newspaper clipping at it's feet told the story of his guide getting killed by it before he could kill the grizz.

Horrible way to go and sorry for the family.

My wife and I camped right where this happened, it is pretty thick scrub brush, there's a good chance he didn't have time to use the spray and may or may not have had time to pull and deploy a sidearm. You just never know.

The article I read said that bear spray residue was found on his clothing so apparently he was able to deploy it.

I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

It bothers me that they describe the guy as a "guide." It's true that he works as a guide but he was fishing on his own when he was killed, not actively working as a guide. If I was killed by a griz while hunting elk would the headline be "Engineer killed by bear?" I don't think so. It seems to me to be intentionally misleading by masking the danger that bears present to folks fishing in the area.

I often carry spray, firearm, and dog. I've used the spray once, the dog self-deployed once, haven't had to use firearm yet.

You can carry in the park except some of the park stores, visitor centers and such.

The author was most likely using the term "guide" just to illustrate that the person killed, had a lot of experience in the woods.

That put the hair up on my neck a bit. I lived in West Yellowstone for four summers and a couple winters in the late 70's and fished alot in that exact area. You can walk from town through the lodgepoles to the Madison where almost nobody fishes, and if you go north of town towards the airport you can do the same thing before the river crosses the road north to Bozeman. I jumped a black bear out of a nap once and it scared the crap out of me, but I never had a gun at that time. Just north of there on Duck Creek, there were grizzlies who fed on winter kill elk and you always went in there with your ears back as every willow could hold a bear on a carcass, but there were huge brown trout, and black bears were still a big thing in the Park before the grizzlies made the comeback.

The Madison skirts the Park line north of town til you get to Bakers Hole so carrying a gun would be sketchy with Park regs.

Too bad for all involved.

Pete

Don't the serious woodsmen up there consider bear spray as "seasoning". What I was told when I was up there. Just got my Kenia Chest Holster for my next trip. I think I'll go that route.
