I have never trapped or caught a beaver but have a question on the drowning rigs that are described and shown on this forum and YouTube.

The rebar drowning rod that is staked on one end while the other is pushed in the ground. I can see the stake side holding in place when the beaver or otter is caught but the other side is just pushed in the pond or river bank on an angle. How sturdy is this side? Couldn’t a beaver or otter pull the rod out and then have the L- lock and trap slip off the rod when thrashing to get away?

I use fiberglass and reach out high and far to stick the end in as vertical as slope allows. Push it in far enough that it doesn't pop loose as the top is bent over to the bank. Done right there is now tension holding everything tight once the top is pinned in place. Never had one moved.

Tieing off the top end of a drowning pole(triangulation) if the bottom is a bit soft will keep a trapped beaver from pulling it out.Not necessary if you can shove it in good from the bank.
I think the top end of drowning rods are staked at the bank(i dont use them).

My rods have a big washer welded flat on the rebar about a foot from the deep end. I have a washer welded flat on the top to put a stake through. The drowner is in between the 2 washers. Sometimes I will cable off to a tree or bush or another stake. I haven't caught a bunch of beaver but I have only had 2 pull the bottom out of the mud and was probably my fault. I have never had the T stake at the top pulled.

I welded a piece of 1 1/2" angle about 8" long on the bottom end. It makes it harder for beaver to pull and the trap will not come off if it does get pulled. The top has a 1/4" rod U welded on for the stake. The U is tight enough I can slide the drown lock off to change the trap if I want.

I am still new to trapping, but I have had success using a drowning cable staked at the bank with a cinder block as an anchor on the other end. Just throw the block out and your done. Caught three beaver within a few weeks on the same ts-85 this way
