Has anyone ever used the winchester model 70 in this caliber? How would it compare to the ruger m77 in the same caliber? My dad has the ruger m77 and I like it. Been looking around for a gun with a strong action to use factory loads. I have a spanish mauser but it doesn't have steel strong enough to handle the modern ammo. Would one be more rugged and accurate than the other? Thanks!

Should be ok. I've not had one in a Winchester but have a couple 7x57 in Remington which work ok.

Built a Ruger 7×57 Ackley Improved. My main hunting rifle. Killed alot of game from bison to coyotes. Havnt shot the new Winchester but have read good reviews on them. Depending on when it was built they had some tack drivers. Definitely a good round for younger/Smaller frame shooters.

for factory ammo they could both be good shooters

see which one feels better in your hands

the new Winchesters are not US made haven't been for a while the Ruger is US made I have used their customer service it was good . I have never used Winchester customer service so I can't comment

I would go for the Stainless Ruger if I could get one

The 7x57 is a great caliber. I like Winchester style actions. That big claw extractor and CRF is hard to beat. The triggers on the old pre-64 Winchesters were probably the most foolproof trigger ever designed. I just bought a Montana that has the pre-64 style trigger. What the Winchesters are not good at is safety. They have one of the worst gas handling system on any bolt gun. I read an article the other day that said the Savage bolt actions have the best system for handling excess gas. That said, I wouldnt hesitate to buy one. Just be careful with reloads and you wont have any problems. The Rugers are good durable guns too, Ive had lots of them over the years.

I love 7x57's and model 70's. It is a perfect combination. I have several, well I did until the boating accident. I far prefer them to the Ruger's in 7x57 that I had.

I have nothing clever to put here.

X2 what Dave said about the newer model 70 CRF and claw extractor. I have one that was new in 2008..............I changed the trigger to a Jewell and love it ! Not 7x57 though.

On the other hand, I shot an M77 in 25-06 several years ago and it about beat me to death. Just didn't fit right

Nice! I should have waited for responses. I had a choice between the two. I am use to my dad's ruger so i bought that one. Should have it in a couple of weeks. My dad has drop moose off at a distance on several occasions. I think the best shot he made was over 400 yards while it was running. Was going to shoot again but it reared up on its hind legs and flopped backwards. Shot the moose in the heart.

You will like the Ruger. I killed one moose with a 7mm08 which is a twin to the 7x57. It worked just fine.

Killed a moose with the spanish mauser last season while hunting with someone. Didn't have as much power since I loaded with less powder to safely fire from the old rifle. Would like a load with full power.

Not to change the subject here but what’s wrong with the spanish Mauser actions? What makes them weaker than say German Mausers?

The Spanish Mausers were built of as good a steel that was available at the time. The earliest Spanish Mausers were built in Germany and then license built in Spain. where they get a bad name is that they are built on the earlier 1893 and 1895 actions which are small ring (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) on closing actions. Most people are more familiar with the later 98 action with improved characteristics. I have shot a bunch of the early Spaniards with U.S. loaded factory ammo which is NOT loaded to the pressures of modern ammo. That said, these guns are now well over 100 years old and should be checked for head space first.

I have tried factory ammo through the Spanish mauser I have, each shell has raptured and gasses were sent out of the port. I would think mine is made of a milder steel since this has happened. I usually load 2 to 3 grains less from max in order for the rifle to shoot and be able to reload the rounds.

I will probably still shoot it, it is accurate. I probably wont shoot it much though since I have the ruger m77 coming it. Just used my ruger american predator yesterday, went out, shot a seal, and came back with it in half an hour. Was impressed with its accuracy

I agree, wall hanger,. Remington 700 in .280 is a special, to me, caliber 3 bull moose, one shot, one kill, my daughter at 7 months pg, my wife only big game she ever shot at and me. Forget how many Elk. Did have to shoot one a couple times because I had knocked my redfield widefield eliminater when I fell down that morning I found out later that day as I returned to camp and shot at a target. That gun started out a Rem 700 mt. rifle but changed the barrel to .280.

I’ve got a model 98 Spanish Mauser chambered in 7.92 or 8mm Mauser. I’ve had trouble finding info about it. Y’all know of any k98 Spanish mashers in 7.92?

I'm no expert, but that sounds like an excess headspace problem. I wouldn't shoot that rifle anymore.
