I remember as a kid seeing a few pictures on the cover of his catalog. Loved his catalog and lures. Does anyone have any pictures of him that you could share or maybe a few words about him if you ever met him.

Thanks David

My grandfather trapped some with Butcher. The two of them designed a Blake and Lamb #2 underspring with an offset galvanized pan. The pan had all 4 corners bent up as the trap was made for fox "water sets" and the upturned pan corners kept the sod placed on the pan in place. Blake and Lamb manufactured these traps and Mr. Butcher sold them thru his trapping supply business. Somewhere in my stash of foottraps I have one, will post a picture when I can find it. NOTE: Foottraps are illegal to possess in NJ so mine are "stashed" out of state, not accessible on a daily basis!

Met him once at a Pennsylvania Trappers convention in Clearfield PA. I believe it was 1969. Very nice guy. Used his lures along with EJ Dailey and Hawbaker’s when I started trapping as a kid.

O.L. Butcher lived in Shushan,N.Y.,owned a plane, and would fly up to his camp on the Blue Ridge in the central Adirondacks. I never met him, but remember seeing him at the NYSTA conventions at Piseco. I sold furs at his place in Piseco. After he passed away his wife Alice remarried a man named Raymond Duntley and they lived in North Hudson, N.Y. I visited them several times and was able to visit the camp and go inside. Sadly the camp has been sold.Raymond showed us a lot of the country he and Butcher had trapped, and the beaver country of the Boreas Ponds. Butcher had a boa mounted on the outside back corner of the camp where he kept his experimental lures. I remember many photos strewn about inside the camp.
John Rockwood and I were able to get permission to go through the barn at Shushan. There was still a lot of old beaver castor for his lures and many of his business letters, even found one that I sent to make a purchase.
Sam Hart lived in nearby Cambridge, N.Y. who ran Blake and Lamb traps.

That was when feral cats that roamed too far from home were subject to being put up for profit!

I have a book by him "The Trapper's Guide". Judging by pictures next to some of his gear he may have been 6' +.

The first bottle of animal lure I ever bought was from Mr Butcher,,,, It was oil of sweetflag muskrat lure,,,that was in the early 1950’s,,,not sure if I ever caught a muskrat with it, but it sure smelled good,,,

Any original o l butcher lure bottle with $1.00 price printed on the label is very collectible,,,

I got maybe dozen one ounce bottles Butchers fox lure think couple 4 oz. Maybe couple coyote lure.. Was my go to fox lure along with Lenons back in late 70s early 80s.. When I heard Butcher had died I bought what I could find. Our fox population crashed so I put it away. I will see tomorrow maybe take a picture of them bottles post it..
