Just got a call from the Town Chairman. Apparently he has a Fox family and den on his property. There's an adult and 3 very small kits that follow the adult around. The problem is that his next door neighbor has chickens and ducks free-ranging in his yard...a few less at this point. Not sure how possible it would be for them to enclose the chickens and ducks. I have not been out there.

He asked me what could be done to relocate the foxes. I told him that without their den, the kits are so young they probably would not survive.

There's not a whole lot of Red Foxes in this area and I would hate to see them killed, but that may be the only option.

Any ideas or advice on this will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Moosetrot

Tell him to leave them be. They have just as much right to live as some ducks and chickens. whistle

jPut the ducks and chickens in at night.. Fox easy to catch in box traps... set three opposite each other . When one gets caught the others will eventually get caught in other traps.

I have a den in my backyard that has been used now for a few years. They don't even put a dent in the rabbit and squirrel population on my property. Got me to thinking that maybe they hunt elsewhere and leave the prey that is close by for hard times. Trail cam shows them coming and going to the northeast of my property. At any given time there are between 10-15 squirrels in the yard and at night that same number turns into rabbits.

Leave the foxes alone. Ducks and free range chickens have to face the risks.

Reading the replies to the OP I had to check and see if I was still on Trapperman or had slipped onto an animal rights site!

Had a very similar call, except the lady who called me was concerned the foxes will kill their neighbor's dog. She loved watching them (the foxes).

I use premium 1 electro stop fence with a 2 joule speedwright solar power Energizer. Its 48"tall and I have only lost 1 chicken to halks and 6 young ones that could fit through the fence to coons in 3 years. Inspite of the fact I move them around the farm( mobile coup) in the same areas I trap fox and coyotes every year.

They also get locked up every night and not let out tell after 9am.

If you want a litter of foxes moved simply take an old shirt or other rag. P in a bottle (suggest you do this elsewhere ahead of time). Lay the shirt alongside (not in) the den entrance and pour P on it. Babies will be moved out by the mother by the next morning. I us'ta do this many times every spring as part of my ADC business. Never had it fail.

Easy to have the fox relocate themselves. dig at the den, play pups in distress. usually that is enough and they relocate themselves that night. I do it all the time at our beach cottages around here. I have never had to actually trap a healthy fox. Make money on the exclusion to keep them out after they move.

My area is also devoid of foxes, I'd like to see them be more prominent, I'd take them over coyotes any day! Although, my ignorance, could be a fault in my thinking.

Killing those fox wont hurt the fox population. Find the den so you can kill the pups too. Dont let the pups die of starvation or dehydration. I dont believe in torturing animals. Pups deserve a quick death not a drawn out one. If you cant find the den wait a couple months and trap all of them.

Kind of similar to what Eric mentioned ...take few tennis balls smear some coyote gland them toss them down the hole...eviction.
