I’ll spare y’all my write up from my notes section on my phone, but after 4 days of tough hunting we managed 3 birds. I heard and worked birds every day, but believe it or not, never saw the first bird until 1130 yesterday morning when I pulled the trigger. I told my son and buddy I was tired of climbing up and down that mountain and wasn’t coming down until dark or I got a bird.

The birds were henned up bad and not gobbling after fly down. After 4 miles of walking and stopping at likely areas for an hour or more it finally happened. I was just about to start taking off layers when I glanced to my left and see this red head coming down the mountain. He never made a sound until he got to 50 yards and gobbled in my face. At 40 yards he died.

My son and buddy found birds they couldn’t coax off private land, but they wouldn’t give up on seeing them and them coming oh so close. They didn’t want to climb the mountain for some reason and were getting frustrated. They went scouting Sunday afternoon and looked at another area, but my buddy said it was too easy for access to everyone. My son said he just had a feeling.

Well my sons gut feeling turned out to be a good one. I dropped him off at 1630 and at 1830 he called and said, “God is good! Your boy just limited out! Now come find me, lol”

These were his first Merriam’s and mine completed my second Royal Slam.

Awesome. That's a great area. How was the smoke from the fire?
I'll be hunting deer near there this year

No smoke where we were. Plenty of elk and deer though. Got a cool video of an elk at 10 yards and saw a big ole floppy eared buck that is going to be impressive, I think. If I had a Whitetail back home that looked like that already I’d have cameras out every 50 yards, lol.

Learned something while I was out there. Cats chirp...who knew. I was telling my uncle about an elk following me down the mountain my second night and chirping at me the entire way. My aunt said elk don’t chirp, mountain lions do. I thought they were pulling my leg until I pulled it up on YouTube! I was wondering why an elk would follow me, lol!!
