the Garden thread and some comments there got me thinking about my life skills list

this is the list of things that should all be checked off I looked and it seems I started this list about 2012

this was my list of everything a 18 year old should know and have done I must admit I fell short on a few things with my oldest Daughter now 19 she hasn't left the house did her first year of college to become an art teacher from home online. her running a power saw , doing electrical work beyond replacing the end of an extension cord , or shooting a shotgun probably aren't going to happen .but the rest of the list is done and she has a lot of experience in some of the areas like baking.
She also has some incredible art skills
when I said you should help with this electrical or plumbing , I got , I will turn off the water and call you if the pipe breaks

she can shoot rifle and handgun, she chooses not to shoot although the opportunity is offered

what do you think , any additions needed?

there were some things that were more of a talk though like turning off the gas

but it is amazing how often things just kind of came up both girls are into crafts so at some point there was a need to use a hand saw and I am not saying the girls have mastered everything but a little exposure.

my son while he has not sewn much can get a patch on and has a lot more experience in other items on the list

Yeah they may have thought I was a jack wagon when I bough 7 sacks of green peppers 99 cents a sack from the reduced produce and they were all around the table learning to make diced bell pepper and we were freezing them up in gallon bags or learning knife skills on carrots

learning burn care was easy , just buy them a hot glue gun for their crafts.

I don't see the girls riding motorcycle , if they did they would need to take a riding class to get the endorsement on their license

giving bikes greater distance and such in driving a car/truck was covered

Even if she doesnt get to the bottom of that list I still think she will be ahead of the average young person in her age group. It is hard to watch but I see most of them having only a few skills that include video games, being offended by everything, and never accepting responsibility if something goes wrong

How to handle a horse. Could be a very handy skill if the grid goes down. I don't plan on hauling all my essentials on my back.

your right it should be , my wife helped them with it this year and last so they are getting some

their taxes are really simple currently

my youngest 16 started her first for pay job a month ago she is a Nutrition Assistant at a Nursing home , unfortunately last night they announced they are closing at the end of the summer so she is going to get laid off. another life lesson , go looking for your next job.

that makes 2 of my 3 that have commercial kitchen and dishwashing experience.

I have an aunt who tried that , really didn't work out so well , He was from old east coast money , her first husband Uncle Dick who she was happy as could be with 3 kids died in a fishing accident got caught in the net and drown him and another guy both good friends.

it was all good till the money ran out or more like he got cut off by the family then he well wasn't a very nice person having not learned to work and live without family money.

then she left him and moved back to WI with 6 kids to be dirt poor and tend bar and live a happy life single , she says men and dogs it's nice when they come to visit but I don't need to have one anymore 3-4 days is plenty.

she is a lot more at home in the woods in the house her Grandpa built that she grew up in.

Lots of good info and desire to instruct.

I've always believed that learning does not stop, it just slows down, seems the longer kids stay at home for what ever reason, they tend to not use what is learned if some one else is doing it.

We always had days assigned to kids to help them do all manner of things, like dinner, washing laundry, cleaning, repairs on home, maintaining vehicles, just the whole rampant of life, so that learning was not just reading and watching but actual doing which seems to instill a longer remembrance of how to do things on your own.

When problems arose of what to do we as parents who had the learning already done would help in discussion to move things along but did not take over, this also help in learning to talk things out when they got flustered with the problems, something I feel is really lost in todays families.

That it is ok to talk things out and not just walk away or throw a tantrum and maybe cause more of a problem with that result.

Worked for us !

I'm not into bikes either but do know how to ride from A to B. Could be useful someday.

Basic leatherwork/repair is a decent one to have.

I have never made pasta or changed the filter on a furnace. Never lived in a house or had a close friend who lived in one with a furnace, so I've never been around one. Pasta is just one of them things I pretty much never buy, although I do like a good lasagna, otherwise, I'll eat it fine if somebody makes it, but never cared for enough to learn how to make noodles myself, and if everything fell apart and we couldn't buy noodles I wouldn't miss them.

Other than that I pretty much have the list covered, although a couple things like calculating a load I would have to do a quick refresher on. And things like canning/pressure cooking I could follow directions/recipe but wouldn't do it without them in front of me, just something I don't do often enough to have stuff memorized, but I've done it and know how, just need times, etc. written down to follow.
