Absolutely hate those two cities. Anybody familiar with a way to go around them?

Plan your trip around rush hour. That's really the best advice I can give you. If I ever have to take a trip to Atlanta its either during the middle of the day or late evening.

Atlanta is going to be fubar from about 7am to 10am and again from 3pm to 7pm and busy in between. Avoid spaghetti junction, 85/285 intersection, anytime of the day. If you must take 285 get on it get left and stay left to avoid the backups at the exits. Same goes for the downtown connector, use the HOV if possible but not if your solo. They'll drag you out of the thickest traffic to give you that ticket. One caution on 75S is the 85N exit is on the left and easy to find yourself headed north if you're in the HOV and aren't paying attention. If this happens getting turned around isn't easy.
Fridays all bets are off, especially in the afternoon as folks leave town. (says something about Atlanta doesn't it?)

Stay left on the downtown connector unless you really must get off on 20 as the three right lanes will be backed up with traffic going for 20. Pay close attention to your lane and signs, especially on the 285 exits, as you have places where two routes go onto one exit then cross to split.

In the evenings expect serious backup south of town at the junction of 675/75 south to exit 218 McDonough/Hampton. If this is fubar take 19/41 at Jonesboro and stay on it until Griffin hang a left onto 16 and take 16 back to the interstate. Do not try to take 42 through the McDonough square. I know a few back roads through this area but so does everyone else. 19/41 is your only four laned option.

Turn your radio to 95.5 for the best traffic reports.

South of Atlanta watch your speed through Forsyth. Public Safety training center there and they train well. Take 475 around Macon unless to have business in Macon or are taking interstate 16 to Savanah. They're replacing the bridges at the 75/16 junction. When you hit the Dooley county line set your cruise for just under the posted limit and don't touch the gas until Dooley is in your rear view mirror. Seriously, you'll be asked to follow the deputy to the jail for booking and posting bond. Ask me how I know.

Personally on that route I dislike going over Monteagle and getting through Chattanooga.

You asked for a way around and honestly the only one I know of on that route is to take 65 south in Nashville and go through Birmingham to Montgomery then 280 to connect back up with 75 the other side of Albany.

I'll be going through Columbia as usual then after reading this. I thought I may try the Atlanta route home but i'll scratch that now.

From Nebraska to Lakeland Florida. I've tried several routes but they only add several more hours.

If you get through Knoxville, take 40 then 26 and go via Asheville then Columbia and get on I95 from there. Its a little further but quicker.

Cities are all the same in my view. Some bigger than others. Worst drivers are without a doubt in Houston, Dallas and Atlanta. Best time to go through any of them is 2-3AM. Guy I know in Pittsburg has a home in FL. He has vehicles in both residences and just flies back and forth.

I75 goes thru Knoxville, I65 goes thru Nashville. I don't know a good way to avoid either path around either city. Luckily, when I pass thru either it is normally going E-W so I am not using I65 or I75.

Looks like I-285 will take a person around the worst of it and reconnect to I-75.

Negative.

285 is as bad or worse than straight thru Atlanta at peak times.

Your best bet is to time your ride thru Atlanta about 1 AM to 4 AM.

If you traveling i24 east. In Clarksville take Highway 48 to Dickson get on I40 East then 840 connects to I65 . Check that route out might be your best bet .

That’s pretty cool. I was born in Lakeland and all my mom’s side of the family still live down there. Thankfully I live south of Atlanta so I don’t have to deal with that crap hole on route to visit the family.

Never ever get on 285 unless you absolutely have to. If I do have to go through Atlanta I just go straight through. From extreme northeast Georgia I am usually going down I-85.
