This thread has me thinking I'm due for another O/U and should probably start checking out the Beretta and maybe circle back to that Winchester M101 too.

Eh...wot?

I've been hard pressed to ever replace my Browning Citori. Can't say I've ever not had it go bang. Thousands of rounds through it.

Sorry I got here late, could of saved everyone a lot of grief. O/U guns are an abomination. Possibly the clunkiest looking firearm of all time. I know I know, all the best skeet shooters use em. Right, they prolly put it in their Prius on the drive home to their blacktop driveway on Whispering Pines Lane. Which has neither pines nor whispers. Point being, Elmer Fudd shot a SxS, I believe Yosemite Sam had one as well. So gitcha pouch of RedMan or Levi Garrett, a real shotgun and go shoot some real pigeons. Run em to me

If I remember correctly, maybe not, the Remington M332 was made in Turkey. The Kriegoff truly is a fantastic piece of equipment as is a Perazzi and a Blaser. I have shot them all. The Kriegoff is heavy and really soaks up recoil, swings like a dream. The gen one Blaser recoil to me was a little snarkey. The gen two is much better. The only ones I have shot were the F3 model. Then we come to the Perazzi. All I can say, in my estimation, pure sex on a stick. They do everything very very well. I can't afford any of the three, would that I could. I have also had four Winchester 101's two 26 inch skeet 12ga and two trap. A 30" and a 32". All four have gone down the road.

That's a left-handed shotgun Danny. Just a heads up for potential buyers.

What makes them left handed? Aren't they a straight stock and tang safety?

IDK, the ad says it's a left-handed shotgun. Maybe the way the stock is configured?

My main competition o/u is a Beretta 682X which has been rebuilt twice. (About every 100,000 they get loose) Can't go wrong with a Beretta for dependability and bang for yr buck.
Like was previously stated here-to shoot well it must fit. Some people have long necks and others have short necks. Your height and arm length play into barrel length.

I believe they were made by Remington in IIlion, NY. Reportedly the last O/U Remington built in the US.

Remington seemed to be scrambling to get a share of the O/U market from the mid-1990's through the mid-2000's. They kept coming out with new models (based on the old M32) and then quickly discontinued them. The Peerless from 1993-1999 and it's prettier Custom Shop version the M396 of the same years, The M300 Ideal which was only made during 2000 and 2001 and finally the M332 from 2003-2006. All were marketing failures and none were very good quality guns.

As said above though, I do really like the way my M332 fits me. It's a shame it was compromised by poor market-strategy and lousy quality control.

There must have been something that steered me towards the Remington fifteen years ago. I was looking hard at the M101 but bought the M332 instead. What was it you didn't like about your M101's?

Danny, they are built with cast. The left hand guns at times are hard to come up with. A shooter with the wrong handed gun will not develop to his full potential, besides getting whacked in the cheek. I know two lefties shooting right handed guns. They both consistently miss to the right or at best chop off the right side of the bird off on straight away presentations. The gas guns are adjustable in any direction plus up and down. They are great guns also. I have a 12 an 20 391's.

For anyone who is interested in an O/U for waterfowl or for rougher hunting where you wouldn't want to scratch up a pristine Citori or Beretta, here are a few synthetic options

TriStar hunter mag. Comes in 3.5" Turkish gun. I think they run about $650 new. I own one and I don't think it's a bad choice for an introductory O/U

CZ Swamp Mag. I have one in the synthetic black which apparently they no longer make. I think they run around $1000. It took a long time to break in that gun and loosen up the stiffness

Ruger Red Label all weather. it's a black synthetic stock with a stainless barrel. The wooden stock red label started production again, but this model was left out. All these guns would be used and I think they'd run around $1,200. This will be my next shotgun if I can find one available.

The last cheaper synthetic O/U that I know of is the Mossberg Silver reserve. I think a new price on that one is probably $500-600.

There's also the Browning Cynergy... But that's way above my price range

Lugnut, I felt the 101's were too light for my liking. I used the skeet guns for hunting where being light is good. I also felt they were a little whippy. The last two wild pheasants I shot on the farm I grew up on were killed with one of the skeet guns using a trap load of 7 1/2. I got both birds on the rise with one shot, stone dead. The trap guns were also a little light especially using the heavy International loads I used at the time. They did seem to handle better than the short skeet guns. When I started shooting International we used Winchester Pigeon loads, 3 1/2 dram 1 1/4 oz of 7 1/2 nickel plated shot. Two shots at every target. Break it then break the biggest piece. Didn't cost me anything, school paid for it. Now it's a mandatory 24gram (7/8 oz) load. Actually I like the new load, fast, light recoil, and smacks the snot out of a target at some pretty impressive distances.

Thanks Paul.

To me "light and whippy" seem like they might be pluses in the grouse woods where you have right around two seconds to recover from an explosive take-off that has you wanting to duck for cover, whip the gun up, point it in the general direction of the blur and yank the trigger before said blur disappears behind cover. laugh

I always figured three seconds but I'm quibbling.

I use the Citori 725. Their choke tube are different from the older tubes.

Exactly. The proper cast allows for proper eye alignment with the barrel without getting to much check into the stock, which really helps with the quick and consistent mounting. Not to mention less hammering of the cheek.

Whichever O/U that you settle on. If it doesn’t have a four way adjustable comb installed on it have one installed. Then spend some time getting the proper fit. A properly fit shotgun is a joy to shoot both in the way it points and in felt recoil.

Up until the last year I shot off the shelf non-adjustable shotguns and yes they will kill, but once I got a shotgun properly fit to me it was night and day difference.
