Grandpa and me had a groundhog in a tree, it wasn’t put there. Did it get up there itself? I’ve never heard of on climbing.

Yes, I killed one in a trees. Well I hit it with a stick and the border collie killed it when it hit the ground. My boys came in last week talking about one that was in a tree by the barn they are working on trapping.
Yes, they will climb trees.

Yes, groundhogs definitely are capable of climbing trees. Like others, I have seen them up trees many times.
They are also active outside the den at night. Have them on trail cameras quite a few times at night.

Over the years I've seen maybe a half-dozen woodchucks in trees, fruit trees mostly. I probably didn't see at least that many.
Eh...wot?

As a little kid on the farm, our collie was great at hunting them. Once she treed a woodchuck but I was way too young to use a firearm so had to be a bit more resourceful in helping her out. The only thing I had was a toy bow and arrows, you know the type with the rubber suction cups. Well I knew the suction cup wouldn't do anything so I pulled it off and sharpened the end of it in a pencil sharpener. After a few tries was lucky enough to knock it out of the tree and the dog took care of the rest. My mother wasn't impressed with me about wrecking my arrows but my father thought it was brilliant. Later for Christmas I got a Red Rider and think how I handled myself with that woodchuck helped seal the deal. Sure do miss that dog.
Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.
