That is funny all right. I always have several cans around. So many uses for it. I especially like it for removing tar off my car when I've gone through a road that was freshly tarred.
Saw an episode on Mysteries At The Museum on how the inventor stumbled across it. Very interesting.

Depending on how you take that ad, I might have been using the stuff all wrong.

I remember the introduction of WD-40 and it was after 1964. More like 70-71. I was working with a direct mail company and we mailed plastic capsules of it to millions of homes.

Wd- 40 got released in Asheville,NC in 70-71 because it had slow market penetration. Sorry I can't help myself.

I stand corrected on the date. When Donnelley Marketing in Eastern NC (Elm City) mailed millions of samples of WD-40 in the early 70s, nobody there had ever heard of it or ever seen it. We also mailed a coupon with the sample plastic vial. I was hired in June 1970 so I know it was after that date. Of course, it had to be invented before then.

The inventor was trying to come up with a rust preventer solvent and degreaser for the aerospace industry. Water displacement was the goal and was reached on the 40th try. Hence, the name WD-40.

WD-40 should never be used on firearms.

I had a problem with barn swallows building under the canopy of my boat lift. My boat would get splattered with poop. I sprayed WD-40 where they were starting to build nests and that deterred them from building.

One guy I know claimed he would spray his artificial fishing lures with it and caught a lot more fish as a result. Not sure I believe that.

I dont believe that ad would have been allowed in any publication in 1964. In 1964 married couples on TV slept in separate beds.
