So I was doing a little modification on a large ring Mauser 98. action that I rebarreled for 25~06
Drill and tap for Leuopold scope bases. Got all four holes lined up and centered and drilled #31 wire drill.
Pull out a brand new #6 48tpi bottom tap and start easing them in starting on big end.
Hole #1,2,3, no problem, hole #4 about five threads in and yup broken tap. mad
So with a couple of modified dental picks and another 1/2hr got the broken part out of the hole, cleaned up the
broken end of the tap and finished the last one.
Sometimes your the windshield. Sometimes your the bug!

It happens... I've got a 98 I'm thinking about rebarreling to 338-06. Glad you got it done, I know that stuff gets frustrating

Great choice for cal. For the 98. What bullet weight ya figure to run? The 338/06 with 185 mono metal to up to 225 partition makes for a fairly versatile rifle. Lots of thump fairly flat with mild recoil. Got a buddy that always talks about building a 338-06 A.I. Old age done outrun him though.
Have fun with your project.

I agree, a great action and chambered for a round that will definitely get the job done.

As far as perfection none of us are there bud.

I ground the bottom 3 threads of a machine tap to get the show started before using the button tap to finish the job. Knocking on wood like crazy here now as I type with the other hand that I have not broken one " yet " doing it this way.
Being a Kraut, I should probably look for a mauser action for my 6.5 Gibbs build Instead of a Remington. Now I have another idea in my head dang it.

Had a 338-06 barrel installed in an old savage 110. 21 inch barrel, and it's a Shaw heavy barrel. 250 gr. Sierras at 2500. Thumps ya pretty good. Carried last 2 moose seasons but never got a shot. Will be carrying it again this September.

I've been buying car parts, but still keeping an eye out for a barrel. Some day I'll run across one

Scuba if you check out the g shows you can get one for pretty fair price but there’s a ton of work to get them
to what I consider to be a sporting rifle. I’ve got a Yugo 48 that I traded for 2 small ring Spaniard bbl action.
Almost the same as a k98 just slightly shorter, aprox 1/4”, between guard screws.

have you see any of the Turkish K-Kales they are an interesting M38 style Mauser with large ring size receiver with a small ring barrel thread so they look normal till you take the upper handguard off and then they have a small looking barrel

found one still in the cosmoline at the last show for 300

Not real familiar with that variant GREENCOUNTYPEET but I could say the same for a dozen others. Interesting specialty to study. I’m mainly about the true lg ring models, the ones that will handle modern cartridges . The VZs are a favorite. Think I read somewhere they were proofed to 100k. But the memory banks get pretty fuzzy back about 2-3 decades

I guess not everyone is a fan but I used to have an Arisaka made mauser action that someone half way sporterized and chambered in .257 Roberts. I was young and stupid or I'd have never let that one go- it was a sweet heart and didn't believe in wastin ammo. You pulled the trigger and then got to work processing. I never did have to blood track a deer with that rifle, I started out shooting lungs but ended up a neck shot man.

turks are a little harder to get info on , the turks didn't belive in all teh markings and paper work of the Germans , if it worked they used it , if it didn't they fixed it and they didn't worry much about the history of rifles , how many times it was rebuilt , ect.

the turkish ammo also was loaded hot and as it degraded it got hotter yet

some turks were a mish mash of german WWI rifles and defectors trading thier rifle for passage from what I hear

the K-Kale was apparently the only truly Turk mauser here is a little history on the Turk mauser https://www.turkmauser.com/1938/

Leftlane, again I am going into the wayback machine but I believe ol P.O. Ackley intentionally blew up several Springfield and Enfields and Arisackas (sp) to prove the coned breach on the Japanese rifle was stronger even though the metallurgy was not. A 6.5 Jap was the first firearm I ever did any real smithing on. Broken fireing pin.
Think it was ‘71. Used the FFA shops lathe to shape the weld buildup to fit and function. Pulled some bullets and test fired it with the teachers permission. Ah the good old days.

Yeah I so remember the good ol days. In HS if any of us got a new gun we were expected to bring it to school, leave it in the back window, and take it out at lunch time to show our friends and about half of the male teachers. None of us ever gave it a 2nd thought or could have forseen kids getting hauled out of class in handcuffs for having a soft air gun in their gym bag.

This should be a pic of a 98. 25-06 I built about 23 years ago. The pic wasn’t about the rifle but about the blackbuck lol.

CMCF if you ever see need for a fire sale I could probably give that rifle a good loving home and steady work.

LL That’s not me. And the rifle is a family heirloom. Just one of those generational things.
But I do appreciate the kind words.
