It does really make you wonder?
When you saw lumber out of your own conifer logs, even if they are rather small second-growth, it looks beautiful. I would have to search really hard to find poor enough quality logs to make the lumber that you find a place like Home Depot or Lowe's.

Someone else besides Lowes and Hope Depot, probably some commercial builders, must get the decent lumber. I've spent hours digging through stacks of lumber at both stores, trying to find a stick of lumber or piece of plywood worth buying.

Because you shop at Home Depot. That's like asking why you can't get a Honda at Harbor Freight.

Find a lumber yard.

Also it doesn't hurt to learn how to read lumber codes, grades, species etc so you know what you're buying.

I need to hit the like button. We have a lumber yard in Harrisonburg that has cheaper lumber than home depot or Lowe's. Lime and adjustable wrenches are the only thing I recommend from Lowe's.

No, you don't need to be a commercial builder to buy good quality lumber in Virginia. It's still expensive though.

Lumberyards can order better grade lumber but they can make more money by getting low grade lumber and sell it at high grade prices. My Brother orders "Saratoga Straights" for studs and they are a totally different grade of wood. Most likely from Saratoga Wyoming.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

That is some good looking lumber but once it dries there's a good chance that some of it will not be "Straight as can be".

If that stuff is not dried down, I wouldn’t dead rack it like that.

How long after cutting can you build with it? I assume it will be stickered and air dried? Will air drying cause less warping than kiln drying? I see those chainsaw mills alot, and wondered how long from dropping the tree to framing a house?

When you earnestly believe you can compensate for a lack of skill by doubling your efforts, there's no end to what you can't do.

I know absolutely nothing about wood or drying, but I know a guy that cut his own wood for wood floors and placed them shortly after cutting. Six months later he’s ripping them out...they “shrunk” when they dried.

If you want to cut enough lumber with a chainsaw mill to frame a house, you better get started. It is slow work. Thats why I am building a band saw mill at the moment.

Let's go Brandon

A rule of thumb is one year per inch of thickness. I'd say that one year is a minimum and more time would be better.
