I brought a couple oranges home from a hunting trip in south Iowa to show my buddies.I left them in a bag in my garage fridge and the next spring I spread the mush in a trench and they popped up.Last spring I thought they all died but they are kind of late risers. This spring I dug them all out and gave most away.I still have some and want to plant in yard after my ash trees are removed.I assume they grow into trees and not just stay a pricker bush forever.I hope I’m alive long enough to see oranges on them.I thought it would be funny to plant one in my kids lawn and after I’m gone they would have to deal with 20 bushels of worthless oranges every year. Thanks dad your a funny guy! Only one half of them produce the hedge apples. Not a tree guy but I'm guessing theirs boy and girl trees Mine must all be boy trees cause they have little pricks!

Grandparents had one across the street from them about 3’ across at 4’ up. Big tree till a tornado ripped it out of the ground.

I understand making the calls with it, and making fence posts. When I was a kid, every fence around here was made of hedge posts. It's just that they're so thick around here, I still can't get my head around anybody planting one on purpose. I've been thinking about getting an excavator in here and taking out every hedge and locust tree on the place Just another science experiment for me.I might be to far north. We had some crazy cold weather this winter and my tree tops are dead. Will take a while to take over property at this rate.

Why asked someone? They make the best fence posts east of the Rocky Mountains that's why. It will be your grandkids that harvest them tho This is true. I have seen piles of them sell at farm auctions in southern Iowa. My wife asked me at one why guys were bidding on an old pile of tree limbs. What do they get at auctions, etc. for a solid Osage fencepost? Moosetrot

All the fences around here were hedge posts at one time before the metal T posts were common. All corner posts were hedge and a lot of the line posts were also. Some guys did real well cutting and sell hedge posts. People that have never burned it can't believe how hot it gets, it has one of the highest btu ratings of all the woods. It also likes to pop. Get that sap on your bibs or jeans and they will wear like iron, might be a little hard to bend over ,lol. They'll be a good sized round headed tree much like a standard sized apple tree. Not sure what your apple trees look like down there but ive seen as big as 4 or 5 foot diameter and 60 + feed tall around these parts There are trees in a hedge row at my son's place are every bit that big, maybe bigger.

With today's hydraulic equipment there's no such thing as too big of a corner post. I've seen them sell for $30 apiece for a big 12" post 12-15' long. They'd be standing 500 yrs from now. I know of line posts that have stood for 100 yrs. A nice line post will bring $10 each as they last forever. Axtell Kansas has a great hedge sale suction in the early spring that covers a city block. It's worth a trip to see. Only the rows that grow north and south make straight posts for some reason. East to wear rows make firewood. My Brother cracked the firebox on a woodstove with hedge. It can be dangerous stuff.

I planted one of my property lines to osage orange 3 years ago. It is about 7 feet high and very thick now. It makes a very nice fence for sure, no man in their right mind would walk through it.
Being this far north they do get damaged each fall by early frosts. They don't go dormant soon enough and the last couple inches of new growth dies. It seems to recover just fine though.
Osage is valuable as a fence post but even greater if you find some straight grain, or even better snakey grain staves to use as bow wood. 30-100 dollars is a decent price for a seasoned stave.

There is one in a nearby town, the tree is tripled, the smallest fork is 26-28 inches across.

He said the sand blowing across the ground would chew off any other type of post and b/c of that his hedge brought a premium up there. I guess I've never had a reason to doubt him I did work for an ol boy bought a couple pot loads of super nice BWF bred cows from your area said to be only 6 years old but man their teeth were short. That sand must be tough on everything

Hedge fence was made by digging a 6 inch by 6 inch trench. Whole hedge balls were put in side by side then buried. 3-4 years and it will hold cattle. Has to be trimmed every year to keep it thick. Not an easy task without a chain saw. Especially since they get thorns. Hedge fence is where a lot of todays hedge rows came from. If left alone the weak trees get choked out and they get tall. At least thats the way I was told it was done.

Learned about the tree the hard way setting up on a Kansas gobbler early one morning. That joker stuck me umpteen different places and none felt good. That definitely wouldn’t be a limb I’d be picking to get a switching with.

We had them planted as a hedge on our old family farm near Kankakee Illinois. let them grow and then cut them off at about 3 feet and they are cattle proof. I think they were planted throughout the midwest after the dust bowl days to prevent soil erosion. There is a monster at Harrodsburg Kentucky that would be the largest except the trunk is split.
