I have sent out over 50 personalized letters to various landowners. So, far, been put on a list for a future lease and two no's. Have not given up hope yet, but, hopefully my season isn't over before it's gets started. I'm needing private land. Not doing state land, too many idiots. My regular spots are not guaranteed due to cattle, home building, or son in laws, just to name a few reasons. I guess nobody trusts or doesn't need extra money. Keep trying I guess. Sarge

Swamp, your probably right. But most are hundreds if not, thousands of acres. Small fortune for a lone hunter. So, been seeking properties 100 or less. I only need one spot, strictly meat hunt. I don't hunt for trophy. Also, looking for a long term agreement for improvements.

I don't hunt for trophy. Also, looking for a long term agreement for improvements. Finding a small private tract is tough for sure, esp a tract in a good location. I'd check with you local Natural Resource Conservation Service office, Farmer's Co-Op, etc. Also, give your local game warden a call. You can pay more for a smaller tract and it still be affordable. Good luck

Been thinking about more squirrel hunting in the fall. Especially folks with pecan trees. Pecans a big business around here. Might open a few deer spots in the future. Also thought about taking up air gunning for small game and cross bow hunting. Folks with small pieces of land might be more receptive. Sarge

Watch craigslist in the sporting goods section. You will occasionally see adds for established clubs wanting a member here or there. Get your foot in the door and sometimes when everyone else backs out its yours. Or someone on club will know someone.....

I put an add in the local paper. It said something like "I want to rent land for hunting. 50+ acres preferred. It's just me and my 12yo son. with phone number. I had three replies and picked one property to lease. It was nice being on private land.

I've watched Lone Star Law enough to figure out if I move south my hunting days are probably over if the public land sucks. I can't justify paying someone a $1000 or more for the chance to kill a deer. With the small body size of those deer it'd be like paying $25 or more a pound.
I've got private ground I hunt here and am lucky I do. I doubt I'd ever lease ground for hunting. I'd try public to see how that would go. I just wish the WI DNR was smart enough to rent out the open ridges and bottom lands to farmers to plant crops on. The hunting and wildlife numbers would be better. They used to and when we did hunt those lands we saw more deer then. I do occasionally walk through some public ground in my area and see fewer deer and sign than I did in the 80's. The nice fields are just tall grass, weeds and brush now.

Maybe you could try working for a farmer on weekends. I know this is the worse advice ever. But I have met one person who gets hunting privileges this way. Dairy farms are usually open-minded toward people with a good work ethic.

Been hunting, fishing, trapping ever since on all there land.

I think it is a horrible precedent the south has set by leasing out hunting rights. Pretty unAmerican, in fact downright European. Making it where hunting is only a rich man's game. Yep, and it is spreading. When I was a kid, I could hunt, trap, or fish anywhere I could get to with just an ask and handshake. Now that my kids are the age to be getting out only a couple of the old farmers will let them trap and fish, but there is no deer hunting as it is leased out. If not for the family farm, the kids wouldn't have any deer hunting. Funny part is those farmers are cussing about the over abundance of deer as the numbers killed are way down with the leasers only taking bucks. I call it Karma!!! As for the OP. SGT, if you was to knock on my door and ask about leasing for deer hunting, I would likely tell you to go (do something that I can't post here) yourself. Now if you was to say you are a meat hunter and looking for a place to kill some does, I would probably show you a few stands, tell ya to be respectful of my land and the kids's hunting, explain that you must fill all the tags the state will allow (this would not be a problem and most likely only take an evening or two, is only like 5 tags), and say good luck as I shook your hand.

I would consider out of state .Last couple years here you could buy 2.50 license unlimited number after your reg tag .less deer now but still a lot and many places to hunt
