Most around here is being baledin big bales, mostly big round bales because you can't hire hay help no mater how much you offer them. When I was a kid I made 50 cents an hour and was glad to get it.

Here in western Oregon it's sold as soon as you can bale it. Most headed over to eastern Oregon.

Last time I baked hay 2014 or 15 got $10 an hour. Had to stand by elevator and drop bales on at an even pace so I did kill the guys up in the barn.:). They have the wagon that picks up bales in the field and then stacks them on the wagon. When they get to the barn it tips up and sets the stack down in the barn( about 7-8 bales high I think) my job was to send up bales to stack them higher. Easy work if you can get it.

I remember the first set up like that I saw. It was mid 80s and this was New Holland. Anyway, a pair of good hands with an elevator could put a load in the loft in 20 mins (if they believed in workin for a livin anyway) and the wagon on a tractor would easily be a hour round trip. We finish, hole up under a shade tree, and sit so long the sweat would try so when we heard the tractor comin we'd git the water jug out and let water run down our shirts so it looked like we had just got done when the owner come back around LOL

Of course myself and the guys I'd haul out to jobs like that took a bit of pride. Anyone (including the guy with that fancy wagon) ask if he was goin too fast or if we needed a break we would always smile and say "more hay" like we was 10 ft tall and buller proof. Good times I tell ya- I never had sleep problems back then- never

$7-$9 / bale? LOL Who told you that? Other than very specific varieties sold to crazy horse people, or maybe sold to someone desperate, it's not bringing anywhere near that. thats because youre in hillbilly land....they want everything free. Last yr up here grass hay sold out at 6 a bale. This yr orchard grass with a little alfalfa and timothy with a little alfalfa is 7-9 a bale. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/141672207982511?ref=search&referral_code=marketplace_search&referral_story_type=post&tracking=browse_serp%3A79b1cdbf-3074-4c70-8f0f-7a36cbc37dfa heres morehttps://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/3957761184313063/?ref=browse_tab&referral_code=marketplace_top_picks&referral_story_type=top_picks&tracking=%7B%22qid%22%3A%226967048475145670114%22%2C%22mf_story_key%22%3A%221052659310363413587%22%2C%22commerce_rank_obj%22%3A%22%7B%5C%22target_id%5C%22%3A1052659310363413587%2C%5C%22target_type%5C%22%3A6%2C%5C%22primary_position%5C%22%3A0%2C%5C%22ranking_signature%5C%22%3A5990897418441326592%2C%5C%22commerce_channel%5C%22%3A501%2C%5C%22value%5C%22%3A0%2C%5C%22upsell_type%5C%22%3A21%2C%5C%22grouping_info%5C%22%3Anull%7D%22%7D$$ 9 a bale alfalfa

Good third and fourth cutting alfalfa here in the winter time will bring a pretty penny. I've seen it go for $10 to $14 dollars a small bale . Horse and sheep -goat owners pay that much. Prairie hay easily goes for 5 or 6 bucks to $10 a small bale pretty fast. Right out of the field the big round bales sell for a fair amount too. Our first cutting alfalfa was short here and early brome hay will be short too. Pretty dry this spring here in my area of SE Nebr.

I bale hay off a few surplus acres, both mine and my neighbors. Small square bales sold to equine and goat market. Selling 50 pound bales (standard used to be 60 pound bales, but this market will pay the same for 50 pounders as that is all many of the buyers are physically able to handle). But 50 pounders for $5 min, and have sold as high as $8. That translates to $200 per ton......to as high as $350 per ton. I pay 60 cents a bale for labor to haul it, and they way we do it, a two person crew can make as much as $45 per hour, so they show up when I call. A couple buyers insist on picking it up from the field themselves, and that does not hurt my feelings at all.
Hay market is very local. Some buyers very knowledgable, others clueless. Have finally educated enough buyers about what quality hay looks like that I can sell all I have to repeat customers.
But in small lots, I can double what I make by selling in small squares. Finding reliable labor is the key......most kids would rather lick a skunk's rear end than touch a hay bale.
