Sure resembles chickenpox, or could be an allergic reaction to something. When I had chickenpox as a kid I remember my body looking like that. Is he itching bad

Yup, my youngest got chicken pox in spite of being vaccinated. The older two got it the old fashioned way pre vax.

A friend of mine who is 75 had the same reaction from his second Covid shot from Moderna. He broke out in hives and had some other allergic symptoms. He went in to the Dr. and was told that it could have been life threatening. He was prescribed steroids to help him get over it and was told the steroids would reduce the effectiveness of the so called "vaccine".

Sorry, I thought your son had a reaction from the Covid shot.

I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

Is it all over his body or just his back?

All over his body I would say most likely chicken pox. If just on his back I'd say a spider got down the back of his shirt and had a party.

Danny, because the Varicella vaccines are typically live attenuated (weakened) immunizations, people with weakened immune systems for any host of reasons (sometimes genetic) who have a heightened response (it seems they get the disease) after a dose should see a doctor.

It wouldn't hurt to get him in to see someone asap. It appears he has the CP after the shot and if that's the case, I'd have him looked at asap. Tuesday is 4 more days and I wouldn't wait that long. CP can establish in patients with decreased immune systems quickly.

Good luck partner.

Blessings,
Mark

Oh good to know. I thought he just got it.

It'd be worth telling the doctor all this when she takes him in Tuesday. Doc should draw some blood to check his humoral immune response. That's usually what's involved with reestablishment of Varicella. It may not be vaccine failure as much as how his body geared up to respond to the live attenuated vaccine.

Very unlikely to be chicken pox. The CP lesions are very unique in appearance and what I see there are not CP lesions. Look closely and see if each spot is centered over a hair follicle. That would aid in diagnosis. Almost no rashes are emergencies or even need to go to the Dr, especially if there are no other symptoms.

Looks like a body's response to a viral infection. Little Benadryl and some Hydrocortisone ointment he'll be just fine. The rash itself is usually a good thing. It means the body is responding to whatever it has found that's foreign.

Or your wife can take him to the Dr. pay the bill and they'll likely tell him the same thing. If it's really troublesome they might give him a little steroid. A daily second generation anti-histamine like you'd take for every day allergies would also be helpful.

So WadeRyan, you work in a hospital, correct? Emergency Department. With only giving broad details, unless you've been ordered to not say anything, have you seen some vax reaction patients roll into your facility?? I understand if you can't say anything. Medical employees are being kept on a short leash in most places.

I've worked in an ER for the last 12 years and was a house supervisor through Covid for the hospital. Today's my last full time day in the emergency department. I have a contract to work in primary care starting next week. I've been working primary care two days a week on my days off for the last three months.

On patient's I've seen for yearly physicals. A lot of them quality for CT-chests due to smoking history, biannual mammograms, etc. I've had to hold off on ordering those tests for 2-3 months because we've had a lot of those tests come back with positive lymph node reactions which can lead to further testing which really isn't warranted. I have taken care of a number of people with reactions to the vaccine and they are wide varying responses. I had one lady take a shower two days after her vaccine, felt an enlarged lymph node in her armpit, have a nervous breakdown thinking she was dying of cancer, but I was able to explain why when she arrived at the clinic (she'd had her Covid shot in that arm two days prior). I've seen people with a rash such as was pictured by Danny a month out post vaccine. Most of the reactions have been minimal. Irritating but not life threatening.

I'd say the majority of the "reactions" are anxiety related that I have experienced. They do happen. For the number of people I've taken care of that have got the vaccine (I've been seeing about 30 a day for the last three months) I can count on two hands the numbers of reactions I've taken care of. I don't advocate for the vaccine or voice against it. We're all adults and can make grown up decisions.

Well he has had a couple doses of diphenhydramine now and the rash is diminished. Says it doesn't itch. He has been outside all day. i am glad its not chicken pox. i had a dose of shingles a few years ago. not a pleasant experience.

Thanks for the advice WadeRyan.
