I think we need a fur market. Not much interest when there is no money to be made

Morning Tony. Not much coming out from the VTA huh. Did see something from Winston over on Face about their working on trying to figure out a time frame for a convention..... I didn't get a ballot either on the last elections.......

Very difficult to keep members of any associations going right now don't matter where you are.

In the past our Trappers Council has been able to keep it together by doing various activities such as regular meetings and other activities such as trap boil, group breakfast and volunteer activities e.g. helping flood victims. However, not much has happened recently. I too agree fur market has not done much to generate interest certainly not the market we had in the 80's.

You can see some of the activities in our pics section. http://gtc-ctg.weebly.com/photos.html

We keep moving forward with information, I don't know what people expect to happen if they don't step up. We(the NMTA) are going to have to raise more money and support than ever before. People have quit trapper associations for VERY PETTY reasons, you can't sit back anymore. We will win this fight, come be a part of the fight!

It's a good time to be a trapper!

Do you think social media and forums are killing associations? I'm not saying it's good or bad but trappers can socialize and get info online.

I'm not a member of ours. I am a member of 2 national ones.

Check with Rusty Kramer, the president of the Idaho Trappers Association, he has done an awesome job of increasing their membership.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

The drop in memberships due to lower fur prices is something I do not understand. This is when the antis gain ground against us. Debbie & I keep our memberships and promote our associations.

I haven't trapped in five years but still belong to the WTA.

It seems to me most people trap for money. You get alot of funny looks spending more money running traps than you make. That kills some folks enthusiasm including keeping their memberships.

Membership drops when there are less trappers. If you quit trapping because prices are too low to turn a decent profit, you are not really concerned that somebody bans something you no longer do. You certainly won't be a member of a trapping organization if you are no longer a trapper. I wouldn't.

P.S. Low prices = antis winning.

Why should someone be a member of an association that puts on one convention a year that is open to the public? If a association wants members, there has to be a reason to be there. Yes, some people will be there no matter what, but when you cancel conventions and offer nothing for being a member people are going to bail. The more active an association is the more people it will have as members. Since NDFTA started putting on fur auctions again we have more members getting involved and helping. We even have people there working that have no fur on the sale.

...i agree Rusty is a great guy and a strait shooter. it is amazing the amount of energy and passion he has for the trapping industry...many many many hours and days he spends talking with buyers and trappers to put on these sales all on his own time,,,western idaho went from no sales a few years back to putting on great sales if not the best sales in western usa under his leadership.. and involved in so much more with fish and game and landowners with wolf management to... idaho is fortunate to have him

That's part of the problem in Wi. We've been without a VP for a year and a half.

Cotton, suggest they have the VTA convention in Bland again. D1 does a great job every year. They could have it in October in conjunction with the annual Bland convention again.

I was very active in the American Legion in early Y2K. At one of our district meetings I was chatting with the commander of one biggest posts in PA, about 1200+ members at the time. They could hardly get a quorum for their monthly meetings.

In District 8 of the PTA "low" attendance might be 20+ members. Some meetings are 50-60! This level of participation blows me away! The district is very active with a spring & fall sportsmens' show, trapper school, meetings that have a demo, potluck lunch, and business meeting. The district officers are very committed, as are the members. Truly amazing.

Old guys just dont socialize like young guys. Not many young guys interested anymore. Like it or not trapping is commercial. Always has been. Venison and sometime fish, turkey and pheasant meat may be expensive but it's still meat. Spend 1000 bucks to catch 200 dollars worth of fur is a hard pill to swallow.

Not admitting to ourselves that fur trapping is commercial was a mistake. Now we are dealing with all the urban soccer moms who say killing animals for fun is wrong. Those soccer moms are who we need to market our product to.

Its not like you haven't heard that before either.

danny is on to something. Maybe with so many things upside down in our culture now, it'd be a fine time to promote fur. If bad (killing animals) is now called good.... us trappers are top of the heap!

Just rank 'em.

Save the planet is >>>> save the animals.

Get the planet activists pitted against the animal activists and the climate activists will win.
They have more clout at present.

To save the planet, before we move to Mars, and have to live on solar kelp, we must all drastically reduce carbon emissions by wearing raccoon and muskrat fur. Even if it's hot outside.
Hm......
wink

One thing that keeps membership to stay bought in is to actually work for them in their state trying to protect and perpetuate trapping on their own state issues. All states have different problems, game depts., and working with other outdoor groups that more directly pertain to them personally. I believe trapping would be on a much firmer footing and stronger with more local emphasis, state wise, than just being only a part of a national and waiting on them to come to your rescue if needed. Usually on state issues it is the state membership working on the ground on it. When states like Tennessee get rid of rubber jaws and being able to use 110’s for mink and a 48 or 72 hour water check by a few individuals in leadership of the organization working with the state game dept. the lay membership sees something is going on with their own dues that directly benefits them. We have been successful here by sitting across the table with KDFWR and working with them on outdated nomenclature and clearing up things like the definition of a legal snare everyone can understand from trapper to CO to county judge. Being a member of national trapping organizations is fine but when 80% of the trappers dues goes directly out the door it leaves little of what could have stayed in state to work for that individuals trapping rights that most directly pertain to them.
