I think we need a fur market. Not much interest when there is no money to be made

Very difficult to keep members of any associations going right now don't matter where you are. In the past our Trappers Council has been able to keep it together by doing various activities such as regular meetings and other activities such as trap boil, group breakfast and volunteer activities e.g. helping flood victims. However, not much has happened recently. I too agree fur market has not done much to generate interest certainly not the market we had in the 80's. You can see some of the activities in our pics section. http://gtc-ctg.weebly.com/photos.html

Check with Rusty Kramer, the president of the Idaho Trappers Association, he has done an awesome job of increasing their membership.
I got myself a seniors' GPS. Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination, it tells me why I wanted to go there.

The drop in memberships due to lower fur prices is something I do not understand. This is when the antis gain ground against us. Debbie & I keep our memberships and promote our associations. Membership drops when there are less trappers. If you quit trapping because prices are too low to turn a decent profit, you are not really concerned that somebody bans something you no longer do. You certainly won't be a member of a trapping organization if you are no longer a trapper. I wouldn't. P.S. Low prices = antis winning.

Why should someone be a member of an association that puts on one convention a year that is open to the public? If a association wants members, there has to be a reason to be there. Yes, some people will be there no matter what, but when you cancel conventions and offer nothing for being a member people are going to bail. The more active an association is the more people it will have as members. Since NDFTA started putting on fur auctions again we have more members getting involved and helping. We even have people there working that have no fur on the sale.

Check with Rusty Kramer, the president of the Idaho Trappers Association, he has done an awesome job of increasing their membership. ...i agree Rusty is a great guy and a strait shooter. it is amazing the amount of energy and passion he has for the trapping industry...many many many hours and days he spends talking with buyers and trappers to put on these sales all on his own time,,,western idaho went from no sales a few years back to putting on great sales if not the best sales in western usa under his leadership.. and involved in so much more with fish and game and landowners with wolf management to... idaho is fortunate to have him

Run for one of the positions on the board of directors. That's part of the problem in Wi. We've been without a VP for a year and a half.

Old guys just dont socialize like young guys. Not many young guys interested anymore. Like it or not trapping is commercial. Always has been. Venison and sometime fish, turkey and pheasant meat may be expensive but it's still meat. Spend 1000 bucks to catch 200 dollars worth of fur is a hard pill to swallow.
Not admitting to ourselves that fur trapping is commercial was a mistake. Now we are dealing with all the urban soccer moms who say killing animals for fun is wrong. Those soccer moms are who we need to market our product to.
Its not like you haven't heard that before either.
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

danny is on to something. Maybe with so many things upside down in our culture now, it'd be a fine time to promote fur. If bad (killing animals) is now called good.... us trappers are top of the heap! Just rank 'em. Save the planet is >>>> save the animals. Get the planet activists pitted against the animal activists and the climate activists will win. They have more clout at present. To save the planet, before we move to Mars, and have to live on solar kelp, we must all drastically reduce carbon emissions by wearing raccoon and muskrat fur. Even if it's hot outside. Hm......
