Sabine River probably still has some 100lb left. There used to be some guide services specializing in big gar.

Trinity river anywhere between Huntsville and Dallas. It's loaded with them. Trinity river in Dallas Texas. I used to fish it for Gar about every Friday night. Little river with huge Gar and lots of fun. Use cut mullet for bait. Use a steel litre and let them run until they stop then set the hook. It’s one heck of a good time.

If you accidentally snag a smaller one closer to the tail you'd swear it is 100#

I worked with a welder who made spears and would spear them at night. I did not know you could eat them, he would bring some for lunch and they where great to eat. Just north of Huntsville, there everywhere in the backwaters of the river. ( Not sure how many are 100 lbs. but lots of gar.)

There's plenty of the big ones in the Rio Grande and some in the Pecos. We used to cut the back straps out of them and make gar balls and gravy or some really good soup. One guy knew how to slice them and fry them up pretty good.
Yep he was a cajun.

I have ate gar balls in Louisiana. Delicious. Don't have alligator gar here just long nose and spotted. Longnose gar are pretty good too. I hear all the time they are boney. Its just not true. Got back straps. Boneless pure white and good. Use tin snips to cut all the way down the center of the back then skin them down and cut out those backstraps. Gar are a predator. I think most people just gave up on cleaning them cause of that tough hide. Tin snips.

We have Longnose here as well. I also use a pair of tin snips to clean them. Good eating fish. Hard to hook at times, but tasty.
