Heading to Maine for 9 days starting this friday. I've always wanted to climb Mt. Katahdin and catch a 3-4 lb brookie. Will be around Millenocket for a few days then thinking of heading to Machiasport and Bar Harbor. Really have no set plans other than climbing the mountain. Looking for a good fishing guide for a day around Millenocket and any tips on places to fish or things to see and do while anywhere in Maine. Maybe some grounds fishing on the coast? Almost forgot, wife will be along so might need some things for her to see and do.

If you are going to be that far north, you may want to hit more of the Downeast coast on your way back, perhaps Eastport, too bad Campobello Island is still off-limits...The variation in the tides up that way is crazy. You might consider Acadia on the mainland side at Gouldsboro, wicked views from there and by far fewer people. I like the waterfalls that run forward and backward at the Narrows too...On the Island for Acadia, the Bubbles North and South make a nice hike

Plan on a lot of driving as it's a bigger State than you might think...You are going to hit some nice spots, the Knife-edge is a memorable trail for sure. If you had more time I would send you into the Allagash (Eagle Lake) for that brook trout you describe...last I was there the minimum size was twelve inches, but if it did not look like fifteen we released them...

Perhaps Scolloper (or others) will see this and chime in...Have fun...

That's good advice. Route 1 in the summertime is a nightmare of tourist traffic. There is some great striper fishing to be had along the coast and many charter operations run out for groundfish. You might try East Grand Lake. Landlocked salmon, brook and lake trout along with smallmouth bass. Northern Maine is beautiful in the fall but blaise in the summer greenery. I'd stick to the rocky coast and feast on the seafood.

I'll recommend this also!

The coast is really nice and lots of great restaurants along the coast.

You might also consider a boat ride when you get to the coast. Rockland to Vinylhaven Island has regular ferry service and made a great afternoon trip for me when I was up there

Great suggestion.

Also, Acadia Nat Park on Mount Desert Island, although the time of year is not optimal.

It's likely to be black fly season in the woods so take bug dope on your hike.

Thanks. Looks like when we leave Millinocket we're going to Eastport/Lubec area for at least a day. Don't know where we'll end up after that. Told my wife we can go skinny dipping off of the beach at Quoddy light house. Told her the currents bring warm water in this time of year. Haha. I'll let her go first

You're going to see some of the nicest areas (IMO) the Great State of Maine has to offer up that way. The tide swings at West Quoddy Light are some of the most impressive in the world. I am not sure what your plans are for driving times each day, but the Lubec area to Gouldsboro is a nice journey and would allow you to see a part of Acadia most don't, Schoodic Point (spectacular views and fewer people). It's a quick left after the "Narrows" to see a tidal waterfall that runs in both directions with the rising and falling of the tides (weird but neat).

Of course, you should also spend lots of time on Mount Desert (Dessert). As I mentioned, the Jordan Pond area hiking the North and South Bubble trails will give you awesome views of the area...Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor are very nice Villages, Bar Harbor Village is as one might expect, wicked touristy...

From there depending on how much time you have, my favorite portion of Maine is Penobscot Bay...Lunch on the upper deck of Youngs Lobster Pound, a visit to the Camden Hills State Park Mount Battie...From there Darmascotta is nice, Boothbay, Pemaquid Point and Popham Beach...South beyond that, I leave it to others on here...

Enjoy your trip...

Just got back from Maine. Wanted to thank you guys for the advice. Hit Kittery Trading post on way up and had lunch at Warrens thanks to Nessmuck. It was so good we stopped back in a week later on our way back through. Got some 22 shells at the trading post. They had a small trapping section but they did have Mark June Lures. Headed to Millinocket straight through from there. I like that area. Reminded me of the logging towns that I worked near in northern Idaho. Good people. Met a retired warden who owns a fly shop. Big trapper and he had a paper showing that he was #3 member in the Maine trapping association. Gave some good advice on fishing, but told me the big brookies are in the ponds and lakes. Drew some maps and I hit the West Branch Penobscot. Caught some small brookies and had a nice salmon on on a dry fly.
Headed up Katahdin at 6 am the next morning. Why did no one talk me out of that! Had to prove to my 3 sons that the old man (53) still had it. Apparently I lost it. Packed elk out 6 miles in Idaho, ran the mountains in Alaska doing Dall sheep studies, but never got my butt kicked as bad as Katahdin did. Did I mention it was 95 degrees. Low point was on way out, wife and I laying beside a muddy seep sucking water out through a filter straw. 11 1/2 hours later I was sitting on my tailgate wimpering wondering if I could drive back to town. Walked like Mr. magoo with a load in my pants for the next 5 days.
From there we headed to Eastport and Lubec. Beautiful area and amazing tides. Watched the sunrise from the eastern most point of the US. From there headed down the coast visiting some beautiful hidden beaches, coves and small towns. Liked Machias. Stopped at a lobster facility to look around and a nice fellow gave us a tour. From there we headed to Acadia even though everyone we met up until this point told us not to. They were right. Packed worse than a Wal Mart parking lot on Friday night. Beautiful country, but we saw just as nice east of there without the crowds. It was colorful though with all of the rainbow flags flying everywhere. Didn't expect that in Maine! Caught a pile of 12-14" brookies in a stream connecting

2 lakes. Headed from there to the Merrimack river for a striper charter. Hit them pretty good on Plum island, but none hit the 28" limit. Lots of 26"ers. Hit Old Sturbridge Village the next day. Was not real impressed. I like Williamsburg a lot better. It was a good trip other than my stupid idea to climb !@#$%* Katahdin. Thanks for the tips!
