Any tips from you experts. I'm going to take a riding course even though it's not mandatory. Looking at a cruiser in the 750 class.

Can I throw something else in the mix ?? Like a dual sport. KTM LC8 for example. It will corner better than a cruiser and you can take it off the road as well and the LC8 will run rings around most all cruisers to boot more comfortable to ride s well as you can sit in a proper riding position and not hang on yer arms. BMW make some nice bikes in that sort of style as well.

I learned on a Suzuki SV650, classified as a naked sportbike. After 3 years I moved to a 2013 heritage softail.

Do you plan on solo or a passenger?

Buying cheap. About 4 grand max. Something like a Honda shadow.

I been seriously thinking about a bike just like your description. Never owned one before but with the crazy stuff going on I can see a lot of positives for buy some while they are available. Trouble is I know absolutely zero about them. Use to to ride dirt bikes with cousin 30 years ago. Doubt I have the skills to even test drive one but figure if I get one home they shouldn't be any harder to train than a 3 year old Hancock bred stud colt....

What kind of $ range we talking on a good used dual sport bike?

It all depends on the type of riding you are going to do. The dual type bikes are ok. If you ride a lot so your body and get use to them. This subject could go on forever, 750 cc. is a nice range bike. In most cases you will run it at about 75% of its top range.

You could star off with a 250 class dual sport

Easy to ride and get comfortable on

Easy to learn routine maintenance

Go anywhere you want on off road

I suggest Yamaha or Honda for reliability

Suzuki drz 400. Ill keep up with any ktm on that. And cheaper to buy and fix. Dont know where you live but its a lot more fun on dirt roads through the mountain than paved roads with cars trying to run you over.
Sv650 a good bike too. I road raced one for a couple years.

If you want a cruiser, I'd go big. Soon as you get comfortable with a 750, you're gonna want a bigger one. I took that advice and started with an 1100. A few months later I got a Victory Kingpin with a 1638. That was an awesome ride

You'd probably be happy on a Shadow or a Virago or the like...Both have a low center of gravity unlike a duel sport, so you might want to consider CoG in your choice...I ride old-school Triumphs because I like the cornering capabilities of a higher CoG and chains.

Whatever you decide to get, ride it as though you are completely invisible to cage drivers on the road with you... Learn and practice how to counter-steer... Also, learn to make direct eye contact with drivers in intersections...You, like the rest of us, will learn to hate tinted driver-side windows...Good luck...

I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend taking the course. I hadn't ridden in 20+ years and took the course. I am certain it saved my life on more than one occasion. I started riding again in the Washington DC area. You want to talk about combat driving, let me tell you!!! I went with the HD 1200 Sportster, awesome way to get to work! Drive like every single driver out there is trying to figure out how to kill you, because they are!! 4.5 years in the DC traffic will make you an expert on watching every car and what they are about to do!
